Enthusiasm conquers all
I enjoyed this album a lot. I purchased it due to shameless advertising - there was a sticker on the cover telling me it'd be good for fans of Nightwish and Epica. I was feeling indulgent.
There have been a lot of criticisms of this album in other places, mainly centred on the slight clumsiness of some of the lyrics and minor imperfections in the instruments. And these would be fair points, but I've got some counter points.
Firstly, one or two of the lyrics are silly here and there, but there are some others that are really touching. 'New Shores' is uplifting because of the sheer energy put into it, and 'Heart of a Lion' whilst clearly not a traditional metal track is a very sweet song. I liked the softness of some of the songs - I don't think that there needs to be a rule in place enforcing 'hard' music as metal. But I digress.
If I had to compare this album to another album, I'd say it reminds me of 'Angels Fall First' by Nightwish. Not thematically so much as the fact that lke AFF, there are certain technical and lyrical flaws, but at the same time, the passion and enthusiasm that the band puts into it really overcomes those gripes. AFF is still one of my favourite albums because of thst, and look at the improvements that followed, which led Nightwish to such heights.
'New Shores' isn't a perfect album, but I've come to really enjoy it because of how genuine it is. Give them a bit more time and they might well be a great symphonic/power band, but even now, I think this was well worth it.
Excellent symphonic metal
This is my first Lunatica album and it has just blown me away. As a fan of nightwish and within temptation this album is a little less symphonic than those other bands and more rythmic and power. The guitar work is awesome and andrea's vocals are excellent. This album is now right up there with my favourite metal bands and I will look forward to any future Lunatica material.
Brilliantly understated symphonic rock/metal
I really like this CD even though I wouldn't describe any part of it as being spectacular. Musicianship and production are good, Andrea's vocals are good, the music is good, but none of it is stellar and that alone wouldn't normally be enough for a five star review from me... but what this album has is charm.
I agree with another reviewer that this band has a natural sound and are not trying to sound like anything other than who they are. Hard to put my finger on it but this CD does not seem overly self-aware like many symphonic metal bands do. Almost to the point of being too understated. So after initially sounding lacklustre this CD has really won me over and I'll be checking out their earlier stuff.
