CD Description
Pain Of Salvation can expertly deliver their melodically dense sound in a live concert setting, as evidenced by THE SECOND DEATH OF PAIN OF SALVATION. Melding nu-metal, orchestral, and more traditional progressive elements has long been a trademark of the Swedish-based band. Cherry-picking from their catalog, Daniel Gildenlow and company showcase heady conceptual pieces, as well as sections of somber suites that stand alone as songs unto themselves. Though not known for cover songs, PoS also offer their own haunting take on the Leonard Cohen classic "Hallelujah". THE SECOND DEATH OF is also available in a box set as the audible companion to the group's DVD documentary, ENDING THEMES.
Customer Reviews
Truly progressive
Like likeminded musical explorers Roine Stolt and Neal Morse, the highly talented Daniel Gildenlöw - who's also a magnificent Robert Plant impersonator as evidenced on his work with Paul Gilbert and Mike Portnoy in Hammer Of The Gods -has found a natural outlet for his vast musical scope in the form of progressive rock. Mixing all kinds of musical ideas, odd metres and weird chord progressions suddenly giving way to accesible, pop-like melodies. Played by virtuosic and courageous musicians.
Although his restless musical experiments seem to have alienated some fans, here Pain Of Salvation is caught before a highly enthusiastic and appreciative audience at the famous Paradiso in Amsterdam. And they are rewarded by a stunning concert filled with great solos, fine interplay and a wide selection of material, though the emphasis is on tracks from the rather illreceived "Scarsick" album.
There is a strong element of Frank Zappa like musical madness, while the lyrics seem to deal with a world gone mad and the consequences for the individual in todays society. Also a fine sing along version of Leonard Cohen's "Halleluja".
All in all this kind of release show how vital and alive progressive rock still is.
This show is also available on DVD.
