Customer Reviews
Good enough!!
I live in India. My Sister and I are big fan of HP. We both received a gift set of seven books from our parents, a UK edition by Bloomsbury and a US edition by Scholastic. Both reached me in 4 days and 5 days respectively. I must say I liked the UK edition for the Front and Back covers and the language nonetheless, though I admit the US edition is bigger, much better pages, and higher overall quality. I had previously read the UK edition from library, which had the best page quality and I had expected this to be of same quality, but Instead I got that in US edition! also the paper trunk is a good thing to have.
Though I am, had been and will be a big fan of HP, and I like both the editions. These are the best gifts we had since years.
Also disappointed in the U.S.
I think we have been spoiled by the U.S. Deluxe Editions of the last three books. There is just no comparison, but I did not expect equal quality when I ordered this set. I wanted the U.K. versions and it was a splurge to order the "Special" editions, even if I did pay approximately the same amount for each of these as I did for the U.S. Deluxes. I knew there were no extra illustrations or new dust jackets, and I was okay with that.
I did, however, expect a pristine set and that is not what I received. Two of the books have obviously been handled, opened and creased along the spine for the first few pages. Almost all the books have scrape marks across the "gilt" edges, and there are various signs of less than gentle handling including dented corners of the outer box. I have the strong impression that these are the returns and rejects, repackaged for sale, and that makes me feel that my love of the series has been seriously exploited, especially as it is just too much trouble to return the set.
So why two stars instead of one? I am glad to have the U.K. versions, and the typeface is clean and easy to read. I'm not bothered by the off-white paper and the box looks nice on my shelf, even if it does remind me to think twice next time. Books 6 and 7 are First Editions which is a plus. I am also happy to see that the price has decreased to the pre-order level. The higher price was at least 20% above the cost of the individual books, quite a premium for a box and a ribbon. So, if you really must have this set, and you have to pay for shipping, this is the least expensive way to get all seven.
Harry Potter Box Set with Trunk
From the description on Amazon I was not sure if this was US or UK edition. But I wanted a collectors box set and did not mind which it was so I went for this. This is the US edition.
The set arrived promptly, the trunk is quite a flimsy cardboard for the price but very pleasent. Fortunately it arrived very well packaged as I imagine it could take some damage pretty easily. However it is a very nice touch to the set and looks great.
The books are very well sealed inside the trunk, and are good quality hard backs. The cover illustrations and illustrations at the beginning of each chapter are lovely.
I am not sure what it means by box set 1-7 with sticker as there were no stickers in mine. As a twenty something collector this not bother me but maybe dissapointing to a child. Although the books are more than enough for a nice treat.
I really think this item would look great in a kids bedroom too as the trunk it comes in does complete the set nicely.
