Synopsis
KING KONG is director Peter Jackson's sprawling, epic remake of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 movie of the same name, and it sees a film crew travel to the mysterious Skull Island, picks up giant gorilla King Kong, and bring him back to 1930s New York City. Despite his origins as a low-budget filmmaker with a taste for the unsavoury side of life, Peter Jackson has turned into an event filmmaker someone who can conjure up a movie on a scale unlike anything we've seen before. Jackson expands on this basic premise by drawing on the jaw-dropping talents of his special effects team to satisfy his thirst for the grand spectacle. The movie posits Naomi Watts as Ann Darrow, the starry-eyed blonde beauty whom Kong falls for; Jack Black as Carl Denham, a low-rent Orson Welles look-alike who drags the crew to the island to make his movie; and Adrian Brody as Jack Driscoll, a hack playwright who battles Kong both physically and for Darrow's heart. As the men struggle against Kong and the lumbering dinosaurs of Skull Island, Andy Serkis, who made the character of Gollum so believable in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, steps in to form the facial features of the mighty gorilla, lending a real emotional sucker-punch to the scenes between Darrow and Kong. But it's the final third of the movie where Jackson really delivers; his 1930s New York is stunning, and when Kong breaks free from his shackles and stampedes on a lovelorn trek through the city, then iconically climbs the Empire State Building with his sweetheart, it's impossible to not be swept away by the sheer beauty and sadness of the moment. While its three-hour length may prove daunting to some, the payoff in Jackson's KING KONG is ultimately worth it, proving once again that he is a director of breathtaking vision.

Absolutely Stunning
I had this FREE with the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and its absolutely stunning..probably the best HD picture..Wait till you see Kong in HD..You can actually see the hairs on his body waving in the wind!
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE TAKING THE P***!!!!!
This film is JAW DROPPIN, MOUTH WATERING AND BREATH TAKING!!!
I viewed it my my 42" Sharp Aquos 1080p from source Toshiba XE1 HD DVDPlayer (this player is the only 1080p HD DVD Player which has just arrived here in the UK) my was pre-ordered!
This movie was more than PERFECT, the picture quality was so crisp and detailed (appear 3D in some scenes, like he was going to burst through the screen)that I had to "pause" it every other minutes to take it in and let my brain process the information after watchin it the 4th time!! From a 1080p source to a 1080p screen, clarity and detail are so packed in, that in scenes you can see the oil/grease on Kong's fur!
Audio Dolby TrueHD on my surround 5.1 KEF system, through an Onkyo504 Receiver, need I say the sound was BREATH TAKING! In close up scenes you can hear Kong's heart beat!!!!
I own the SD dvd which is good but NO NO NO comparison to the HD version!! DON'T even think of it!!
Very good
To start with i'll talk about the picture quality. In HD the quality is very good, I was playing it on the Xbox HD-DVD addon, and the film looks 3D on the screen as if they're going to come at you. Its more colourful and sharper than standard upscaled DVD. There is definatley an improvement with HD rather than standard DVD, I'd definatley reccomend it if you enjoyed King Kong at the cinema or on DVD, I can't wait to test other HD movies.
I however didn't really enjoy the film, it just wasn't for me. 3 hours was a bit long for a start. The story was good and some scenes were amazing (such as when they're on the boat and they see the island) and the dramatic music that goes with different scenes. But sorry, I got bored in some places when it dragged on, e.g. the girl crying, and when she fell in love with King Kong, it was a bit surreal but good.
The 4* is for the film and quality combined - the film gets about about 7/10 and the HD experience of pictures and sound 9/10 - overall 8/10 which is 4*.
