A Brilliant Record by Any Standards.
It really is a tragedy that this album is so over-looked.I bought this album on the strength of the Punk Boy single(which I bought on its release)and a review of one of the later albums that suggested this as the best place for new-comers to start. My only regret is it took me so long to discover the album.

What I expected were more gorgeously catchy pop tunes of the Punk Boy ilk(although I didn't expect that level of quality throughout).
What I got was a fabulous ALBUM, ie although all the tracks are superb in their own right, but when played together they become a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The overall feeling from the album is one of joyous enthusiasm and love of life/music/excitement but there's time to experience some regret and wistful longing too ('Long Hot Summer'). Lyrically it's brilliant in evoking times, places, emotions and also very funny at times.
Over the course of the album you build a detailed picture of the life and times of the(imaginary?)heroine of the songs.
I played this album as much as anything I owned during 2005 and it sounds as fresh now as any release of recent times.

I would only say that those seeking po-faced dour music need not apply but if you are prepared to open your mind to the idea that, something that sounds so light, can conceal such a weight of quality, and so much joy, then this is sure to delight.

I would add, that while the band have done some good stuff since(and I've bought just about everything I could get my hands on), nothing touches this.
