Synopsis
The value of hemp is today being steadily rediscovered. Thanks to the efforts of pro-hemp activists such as Anita Roddick and Woody Harrelson, people are coming to understand the difference between hemp and marijuana, and discovering the many ecological and economic benefits of hemp, as a result of its use in textiles, cordage, energy, oil, paper, medicine and more. However, hemp cultivation today is still controversial and often suppressed, particularly in the United States. Strange as it may seem the US government was once a strong proponent of hemp cultivation, in fact, the title of this book, Hemp for Victory, is taken from a US government film made during World War II. However, the US government's support was withdrawn in the early twentieth century when anti-hemp protestors such as oil magnate Andrew Mellon and media mogul William Randolph Hearst helped demonise the plant. This book puts the controversy surrounding hemp into perspective, delving into the ancient history of the plant to its many modern-day applications and benefits.
