Helpful book for dyspraxic kids
As a parent of a dyspraxic boy moving from Junior to Senior School I used this book to explain to my son why he struggles with certain aspects of formal education. He enjoyed it & used it as a basis for some questions. Some of the scenarios in the book - where Stephen starts off with the best intentions but ends up with a mess - had me laughing as well, albeit wryly. Best of all it has a positive but realistic ending. Stephen is (of course) still dyspraxic at the end of the book but has been helped to survive and is learning to cope.
Stephen Harris in Trouble
There are many weighty documents written about Dyspraxia. They offer the experts view and are full of information and case studies etc.But there is a gap in the market.Where does the worried parent go for non-specialist information? Who will offer friendly advice to an anxious, concerned teacher who can't quite put a finger on why a certain child is not progressing? Tim Nichol's book goes some way to filling the gap. With humour and accessible advice this book can be read by parents and teachers, understood and acted upon to make a difference to a child's home and school situation. It's not often that I take an educational book to bed and find myself giggling!
Easy to read story based on sound educational theory
Stephen Harris is an easy to read yarn. The story line grips you as Stephen struggles his way through his last days of primary school.
This is a book for many audiences. For children, it verbalises some of their anxieties, for parents it offers solutions for some common problems, not just dyspraxia and for teachers, it offers a quick and easy way to access some current thinking on behaviour management with children.
As a teacher, I think this book is a perfect read for a weekend when you know you should be doing some work but can't cope with anything too heavy minded.
