Best book on tantra
I think this is the best book on tantra written. A note to non-hindus- The author uses very heavy duty sanskrit words, and though he explains their meaning, you might forget it next time around.
He explains Kundalini Yoga in great detail, found in few books. This isnt one of those crap "New Age" books, that ignore religon. Contrary to Western thinking, Tantra is about Meeting god by raising the Kundalini(Serpent Power) to the Head, and not having great sex, as most books in western world about tantra seem to think so.
The great thing is the book has translations of 2 rare hindu books(which you dont have to read as Avalon explains everything), but are useful to students of Hinduism. He also gives postures of Hatha Yoga to go with these.
Excellent book, well recommended, though a bit heavy even for Hindus who know sanskrit.
For practical info, I recommend Kundalini Tantra by Swami Satyananda Saraswati.
Definitive information from an expert on Hindu Tantra
An excellent book that will need plenty of patience unless you're already well versed with the concepts of (Hindu) Tantra. In my opinion yet to be surpassed with regards to its comprehensive content.
Unsurpassed
Be warned, if you are looking for exotic sexual techniques, or any kind of sexual technique for that matter, this book is not for you. It is a very thorough, comprehnesive and detailed study of the subject of tantra from the perspectives of religion, philosophy and mantra. It will require patience and effort to understand everything but it is well worth the effort for the serious student of tantra.
The chakra system is discussed in detail and certainly not trivialised and oversimplified as in so many modern publications.
If you can grasp Avalon's introduction, by far the largest portion of the book, you will have a very sound knowledge of the Tantric approach to meditation, the chakras, the subtle body, mantra, bhakti, laya yoga and the theory underlying it all indeed.
Nearly a hundred years after its first appearance, this book remains unsurpassed in its field.
