Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
A veteran of the U.S. Navy's elite SEAL unit recounts his three tours of duty in Vietnam in a vivid, firsthand narrative, from harrowing missions in the jungle to firefights on the beaches of the South China Sea. Reprint.

From the Author
Easy reading, real-life action and drama, great book!
At the East Coast UDT/SEAL reunion, many SEALs thanked me for writing an honest portrayal of action in Viet Nam. Many women have read it and find it exciting and absorbing without being vulgar or unnecessarily graphic. This is a personal and forthright story of a Viet Nam veteran, and includes all my personal successes and failures. Remember--life is tough, never give up.

Customer Reviews

Started OK but then disappoints1
I am sorry to say I found this book disappointing. Especially given the large number of good reviews by other people. Although I initially enjoyed the book and the narrative was easy to pick up. After a while though, I found the rather self-congratulatory tone about the author's abilities was not endearing and I got as far as page 150 before sacking it. Maybe it was due to the ghost-writer's admiration for the author's exploits? But in any case it spoilt it for me.

Devoid of interest1
Constance's writing reminds you at all times what a hero he is in his own estimation; the veneer of invented glory shines from every page of what sounds from its opening chapter like the sad little invention of a man desperate to make himself impressive in spite of reality, whatever relation this book may have to it. Compared with similar works in the genre this is trite and tellingly glib.

Interesting story of SEALs in Vietnam4
Enjoyed it a lot. What stroke me was that the actions, the killing, the war effort seemed only too easy through the eyes of the author at times. In contrast with some very dramatic other books. Lacks of credibility or depth sometimes because of that. Still, I recommend it. It is a good book and none special forces freak will be disappointed with it.
