Manufacturer's Description
Four products in one, this multitalented firewall router combines an ADSL modem, router, four-port 10/100 LAN switch, and SPI True Firewall to deliver broadband access that's continuously available for sharing with all your networked devices. Simple to use, it plugs directly into your ADSL line for instant connectivity to network resources and the Internet, and an integrated switch lets you directly connect up to four computers or any combination of four computers, access points or printers. Setup couldn't be easier with NETGEAR's unique Smart Wizard install assistant helps to guide you each step of the way. The Smart Wizard also automatically detects and makes the optimal connection to your ISP while the True Firewall protects your network with business-class security against intruders, including logs and alerts of break-in attempts. VPN pass-through makes it safe to connect to your business network from home or office. The unit's contemporary, sleek design suits your home or office, and it's wall mountable to save valuable desk space. Upgradeable with new enhancements via the Internet.
One router supplies your network with impressive capabilities. A built-in ADSL modem furnishes direct, always-on Internet connectivity and multi-user access sharing at speeds up to 140 times faster than dial-up. The router distributes MP3s, digital movies and photos with ultra-fast 10/100 switched LAN ports capable of speeds of 200 Mbps and and shares a single IP address with all the networked devices in your home. Boasts double the memory and a 50% faster CPU than many popular routers.
No need for a separate modem it connects directly into your ADSL line. Built-in Port Forwarding settings, Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) passthrough make it simple to play Internet games, send instant messages, and host Internet services. The user interface matches your local language (English, French, German or Italian). Works with PCs, Macintosh , and virtually all Ethernet devices, and comes with a free Ethernet cable for connecting your first computer.
True Firewall using Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Intrusion Control features Denial of Service protection from hacker attacks, while VPN (Virtual Private Network) pass-through permits secure access to your office or corporate network and enables you to host VPN services. Content filtering lets you control access to inappropriate web sites and limit usage by time of day. Logs browsing activities and provides optional e-mail alerts so you can monitor access. DMZ support allows unrestricted access from the Internet to one computer (for hosting web services).

DG834 ADSL Modem/Firewall/Switch
This is the product for you if
1. You want to connect more than one computer to a single ADSL service.
2. You want to use an ethernet local network (althought Netgear also produce a wireless network version).
3. You want to protect your network from the Internet.
Just ignore the single-PC modem which your service provider supplied (but make sure you're not voiding your agreement by connecting your own kit). Follow the simple instructions with the DG834 and away you go, with up to four computers (more if you add another switch or hub). It took me about 10 minutes.
I've tried several bits of kit and recommend this as the easiest to set up, smallest (and best looking!).
Outstanding piece of kit
I recommend this MOST highly to amateurs and experts alike!
I read all about the Netgear DG 834 on several well known review sites before buying, and it was consistently the most highly rated by users and techies alike. Like most people, the biggest factor was price. To get the 3 separate pieces of hardware offered here in one box here (a modem a router and a firewall) would normally cost hundreds of pounds.
The second thing that attracted me to it was the comments by people on how easy it was to set up. I can now confirm this (as described a few lines below).
I was also very impressed by how it seemed to do EVERYthing and all for what I think is quite a reasonable price. I got my broadband connection quite cheaply on the basis that I would set it up myself, and buy my own hardware. So this litte box has really saved me money.
With this package, you get a modem, AND a firewall (very important if you have broadband so that people can't attack your PC and "leach" off of your connection). What is more, you even get a router, which means that more than one computer can connect to the internet at the same time. It also lets share files and printers etc. between all the computers in your home.
I was concerned about setting up my own ASDL connection because although I am an avid computer "user" I can't really do all that technical twiddling stuff. I was most worried beacuse I have a PC and my girlfriend has an apple ibook, and so I imagined that there would be big trouble ahead.
But it was no problem at all. In fact, the DG 834 did all the settings by itself! I was given a long list of settings and configuration details by my ISP but ... all I had to do was type in my account and password details, and it just worked everything else out by itself! It was even easier than setting up a printer.
Now my PC and my girlfriend's apple are connected to the internet. You can leave them both on all the time without worrying about hackers. Or you can turn them on and off when you like and the connection is just there instantly. Nothing to open, or dial up. Just go to your internet browser and it's done. We can also send and receive files to / from each other, as the DG 834 has given us a proper network.
There is a downside, but it's very minor. You only get one splitter/microflter in the box. We have a second phone extension and so because this was not "filtered" we still had some "noise" on our phone line. Solution? Simply bought a second filter and all problems were solved.
Absolutely outstanding. I haven't been so impressed by a single gadget since ... well ... a very long time indeed.
netgear adsl modem router
I read the reviews here on amazon and other web sites before i bought it from Amazon. I am always sceptical about how easy things are to set up until i do it myself.
Let me reassure any prospective buyers out there that this modem is DEAD EASY to set up. Firstly if you have an existing broadband USB modem and ISP, uninstall the software for the existing modem and detach the USB modem before proceding.
Put the setup cd in the drive and follow all the steps. It really is that easy.It tells you what to connect and when to do it.
Just have your Broadband username and password to hand, and make sure you have a printer connected to your PC to print and keep the settings
