good for novices
When I say novices I don't mean beginners to guitar, I mean newcomers to flamenco. As with any basic flamenco methodology it would help to have some knowledge already of guitar: basic chords, how to read notation or tab etc. I learned classical guitar (but am still a novice) and classical techniques are useful for flamenco.
I can play some of the easier passages of the first few pieces in this book and it's great to hear myself actually playing flamenco even it if sounds a bit ragged still.
The music is great and now on my ipod. If you can get hold of the DVD some of the stuff on there ties up closely with the book and CD.
exellent introduction
This is the best book for the absolute beginner I have seen.If you want to get an overview ,this title is a must. The starting chapters are basic but very helpful,a good starting point.Remember though the importance of getting actual tuition from a teacher is not to be under-valued.
Beginners' Workbook
Juan Serrano started his study of flamenco guitar at an early age in Spain under his father a flamenco guitarist himself, and his flamenco guitar basic techniques book is a work of many years of experience ideally crafted for the beginner to flamenco guitar studying and enjoying.
Written both in music notation and in guitar tablature I have yet to find a mistake in the book after more than four years of practising, though somewhat irregular. The only omission is that the right hand techniques, more precisely the "rasgueado", a peculiarity to the flamenco guitar playing, is not explained with sufficient details for the self-taught players. So, I am giving you this most useful technique inbetween the techniques: the fingers of the right hand must always be brought back close to the palm after each execution of the rasgueado unless otherwise necessitated, and even during the same hand index finger up and/or down stroking of the strings. The reason for this is for ease in passing from one technique to another as you will yourself discover if you really want to enjoy the art of flamenco guitar.
All in all the best advice I can give you is to find yourself a proven experienced tutor. Otherwise, if it has be on your own: 'Flamenco Guitar Dvd' by the same author will teach the basic techniques to you for ease in your initiation. In the mean time if you want to have an idea of what a really good flamenco guitarist can arrive at with simply a plain guitar in the hands, just buy: 'Guitar D'or' by Manitas de plata at Amazon.co.uk of course.
