Best all round
The Footprint South America is the best out there. It has far more information than the competitors, just check the number of pages. It also gives you a greater range of places to stay not just the cheap end, and more places in general. I've been to South America 3 times now and it will be with me on my next trip in Feb March 2010. I can honestly say after reading this book it is obvious that the writers have actually been to the places they say unlike some of the competition. The only weak point is the maps which could do with improvement. Always compare your guide with those of fellow travellers which ever guide you use when you travel to ensure you get the best one. Remember buying a guide is not about following a trend and buying what you always buy, it's about buying the best and most useful guide for yourself. If you are the kind of person who spends all day every day in the hostel, I'm amazed how many people travel half way round the world just to do this, don't buy this, go for the shoestring. If you want to go out and do things and not always stay in a hostel this is a no brainer.
good for details
This guidebook has a lot of details on transport, accommodation and eating options and covers more of the smaller places that other combined (ie south america) guides don't include. The one thing it lacks that some other big guidebook brands tend to have is more of the random bits of information and background to a place. there is a history etc section at the back but some other guidebooks have boxes with extra little interesting facts.
