Customer Reviews

Good product that does it's job very well5
I have had F-Secure for several years and recently upgraded to this latest version. I have a 1.8Ghz dual core with 1Gb RAM and I have not noticed any decrease in performance.

I've also had a search around on the web and a company called 'Virus Bulletin' have tested a load of products and F-Secure came out second overall. As far as I'm concerned it does the job better than most and it is there to stop viruses at the end of the day, so even if it did slow my PC down a bit I wouldn't mind!

All in all a good product that I have installed and forgotten about which is what I want.

It's the virus checker of choice for me - but it's not perfect and it can be expensive for more than three PCs4
I originally got F-Secure free for home-use from my workplace [UCL], so I've got used to the software over the last 8 years. The software installs, and importantly uninstalls easily, leaving no nasty aftertaste as was common with Norton Anti-Virus. The only things you have to really remember to do is to go to 'advanced, firewall, settings' and select your network card and register it as trusted [otherwise it'll be blocked], plus switch off Windows Firewall as FSecure has it's own superior one [my installation did this for me]. This software is expensive to update every year though, so I tend to keep the old engines for a year or two - you do need internet access to get the constant virus updates for your particular engine [software version]. I haven't noticed much of a hit on PC speed with F-Secure installed and I leave the virus checker running during disk defragments etc with no problems. F-Secure can take an age to load [1 minute+] on start-up though if your PC is cluttered with junk, and there's little point in touching the PC until the little F-Secure triangle appears in the Windows task-bar. That said F-Secure 2009 appears to load noticeably faster under XP than my previous version [F-Secure Anti-Virus v7.0].

I now work at Oxford Uni and get Sophos free from work. However for home use I've stuck with paying out my own cash for F-Secure as it offers far more control in [un]blocking software. With Sophos it can be a life or death stuggle to install software it takes exception to [which can be a lot of odd scientific packages that go places consumer software doesn't] and it offers little user control. With F-Secure, once you get used to it, you can easily unblock files that have been incorrectly assigned. The only downside with F-Secure is that it can be expensive when you have 4 PCs in the house, and it's often over-zealous in bashing suspect code. We have many simple Big Fish/Spin-Top type games and their dial-home DRM is frequently detected as spyware and the game gets blocked - but you can put the exe file on the F-Secure trusty list and perhaps switch off 'application control' to stop this. That's F-Secure's strong point, user control, you switch on/off bits while still leaving the basic anti-virus software running. However unblock nasty code and your PC will be at high risk, so tread carefully.

F-Secure has: Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, Anti-Phishing, Anti-Rootkit, Firewall, DeepGuard 2.0, Parental Control, Automatic Updates [via internet], and offers 'fast and easy installation for Windows XP and Vista'. I haven't activated 'parental' or 'spam' control. Only downside with F-Secure is that the engine licence expires after 1 year, although I expect virus updates will remain free [I'll find out in 1 year] - but this Amazon pack does have three licences [for 3 PCs]. FSeecure doesn't seem to do much about some malware, e.g. unblockable adware pop-ups of advertising that 'infect' Internet explorer when you visit a dodgey site, so try PCTools Spyware Doctor or MalwareBytes anti-malware [the latter can fix some malware for free]. Plus PCPro prefer A-Listed Avira Premium Security Suite and BullGuard Internet Security 8.5 over FSecure, and comment on FSecure's large RAM footprint and relative sluggishness, so check those out as well.

Getting to grips with F-Secures options can take a while to get over the learning curve though, as there's lots you can twiddle about with. In fact my daughter's laptop recently refused to connect to the internet. I checked the approx ~100 allowed/blocked files in F-Secure Application Control and all seemed fine. Yonks later, after re-installing the laptop wireless drivers and 'unloading' F-Secure made no difference, I had another look. In Application Control I found that Internet Explorer was actually on the naughty list [blocked], and I'd missed it the first time. Two seconds later, with IE unblocked [Allow], the internet was working again. Until then, the laptop was telling me the internet connection was fine, but Internet Explorer just came up with the standard 'can't display' page. My daughter had obviously answered unwisely during a IE update [I've now installed Mozilla FireFox to double check next time]. At least I had the control in F-Secure to find out what was wrong and correct it. So I'll give it 4 stars. It's just the high pricing that loses it a star - although it's often cheaper to buy FSecure from re-sellers such as Amazon. However for just a few quid more than a single [full price] licence you can get a three PC home licence pack - and this pack allows the one to three installations [3 PCs]. And so far I haven't had a virus hit on any of our home PCs for over 10 years using this product.

Like the curates egg...only good in parts1
I used F-Secure in 2007 and found it to be excellent. Unfortunately the 2009 verision has proved to be far less effective. Recently I was hit by a Trojan which F-Secure (even though my settings were med /high) not only allowed through into my C Drive but it also failed delete. The F-Secure telephone help line also failed to provide a solution. Then, a few days later, an e-mail bearing the words HI5...was allowed onto Outlook Express. Thats right, the PC equivalent of HIV. The end result is that I have spent 12 hours re-installing my original settings in order to clean my hard drive . Sorry, but I have lost confidence in F- Secure. Any suggestions?
