great fun but needs 2 extra cars
we bought this for our 5 yr old son for Christmas and have had lots of fun playing with it already.
The kit needs constructing which is fairly simple to do and will take 20-30 mins by following the pictorial instructions. There are basically 3 sections:
Part I: a launch ramp with a vice to attach to a table. the recommended height is 30-45 cm but it worked perfectly from a standard height table. the track clicks together with a simple fixing and is nice & flexible to accommodate movement and differing degrees of slope.
Part II: a single loop the loop
Part III: a battery operated double loop the loop with launch at the end and a small launch ramp.
There are several play options but you really do need more than the one car that is provided - a minimum of 3 is ideal. We already had several and have found that some models work better than others.
For "Auto" mode you need the 3 cars, 1 positioned at the top of the launch ramp, 1 in the single loop and one in the double. Let the first car go and once it hits the end of the ramp it launches the second car which does one loop then launches the third car. This is where the fun starts! The car in the double loop will complete several loops (we've yet to work out if this is a set number but it seems to be at least 4 or 5), then the release ramp automatically lifts and the car shoots out the end and across the room!!
Part of the fun is that the car in the double loop doesn't always manage to complete all the loops before it comes "off the rails" and we think this really adds to the excitement with the anticipation of a successful trick. Any of the sections can be played individually, particularly the end double loop. There is also a manual launch on parts II and III. we have just set it up with section II before section I and that was good fun although took a bit of tweaking to get it to work. But it's the tweaking that is fun, if it was too reliable it would be boring.
I don't think the other reviewer really gave it a chance but our family love it, including our 2 year old who can successfully launch cars on his own. I gather you can then buy additional sets which should link in to this one (take a look on You Tube for some demo videos)
Flashy to look at but poorly designed
Dont be deceived by the exciting looking graphics on the box. There is little play value with this and no room for creativity. The loops are not connected to each other thus a lot of stopping and starting for 1 second of excitement at a time. Lots of tacky plastic bits that dont do anything. Easy to break. Not enough plain pieces of track to be imaginative with. Overpriced tat. Much better of buying strips of track seperately like days of old.. yet I do not know where to get it these days.
ok on it's own - great if you add it to other hot wheels stuff
It takes quite a bit of setting up (minutes initially, seconds after you get used to it) and experimenting (which cars and settings work best) to get it to work, and on it's own the fun is over a little too quickly. But the great thing about hot wheels is that you can connect loads of different sets together to make an enormous track of stunts and tricks. Yes that takes even longer but the increased fun is well worth it.
