Customer Reviews
Textbook Goalkeeping from one of the best coaches around.
Alex Welsh has trained keepers of the calibre of, inter alia, Steve Ogrizovic and Hans Segers. He has also, slightly less successfully, trained me when his colleage Bob Wilson ran his goalkeeping school. He has had a long career coaching keepers at the best clubs in the country and has extensive contact with Wilson on an ongoing basis. So basically he knows what he is talking about and if you want to become a better goalkeeper, you can rest assured that this is a technically accurate and useful manual, which contains really useful training routines and general advice to keepers at all levels.
This is a comprehensive trip through the goalkeeping art, which is an incredibly useful manual for reference purposes. It is neither too simplistic, (which many general soccer coaching books are) nor overly complex.
best goalkeeping 'manual' available?
I've bought a few goalkeeping 'manuals' before and this is by far and away the best of them. It's well presented and covers everything you would need to know - from specific warm-ups to technical aspects - every aspect of goalkeeping is covered here. Best of all, it's well illustrated throughout and all of the exercises leap off the page at you.
In Safe Hands
I bought this book as I wanted to improve my knowledge and ability when coaching and developing my goalkeepers. I was not disappointed, I thought this book was excellent, nice photos help break down the technique and these are aided by clear diagrams of how to set up practices. The book is also structured well, early chapters deal with co-ordination, reactions and basic handling. As the book progresses it develops onto more complex aspects like handling crosses, 1v1s, set pieces etc. so whatever age or level your keepers are at there is something here that will help them develop.
This could be the best keeper book out on the market at present.
