In November 1989, the United Nations formally adopted 54 principles which make up the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. From the right to a name and a nationality to the right to education and play and special protection for disabled children, the fourteen rights most pertinent to young children have been carefully chosen and interpreted here in simple language. 191 of the world's countries have ratified the Convention making themselves legally bound to comply with its obligations. This is a wonderful international cast of acclaimed illustrators: from Britain, Shirley Hughes, Babette Cole, John Burningham and Peter Weevers, from the US Jerry Pinkney and Rachel Isadora; from Ireland PJ Lynch French artist Philippe Dumas, Chilean illustrator Claudio Munoz; from Germany Henriette Sauvant; Indian artists Amrit and Rabindra K.D Kaur Singh; from Japan Satoshi Kitamura; Zimbabwe born Ken Wilson Max; from China a brilliant new young artist Yang Twesi yu. Each has illustrated a different right with an outstanding double page spread making a powerful and moving book that is both an important souvenir and a stunning picture book to be treasured.

Publisher's note and press reviews
"Whoever we are, wherever we live, these are the rights of all children under the sun and the moon and the stars." (extract)
It has been a joy to work on this beautiful book. From the challenge of interpreting the Convention (a complex legal document) for picture book age children, to choosing and commissioning an international cast of illustrators, Random House worked very closely with UNICEF at every stage. Our shared vision was to create a visually stunning, powerful work that would not only inform, but also entertain, amuse and provoke discussion. The result, we feel, is an exceptional picture book - one for which some of the world's most renowned children's artists have given their very best: a book for every child.
The press has been equally enthusiastic

'This is a beautiful and thought-provoking book.' Mail on Sunday, December 2000
'This deserves to be a treasured gift book for the stylish beauty of its production as well as its content.' The Guardian, October 2000
...and for school
'This is a moving work, a family book or for sharing with friends, and an invaluable resource for teachers, especially those promoting the theme of citizenship.' Times Educational Supplement, October 2000
'The pictures are beautifully matched to the words...Citizenship, though non-statutory, is now part of the school curriculum at Key Stages One and Two.... 'For Every Child' is the perfect tool for teaching young children about their rights... every school library should have one.' Child Education, October 2000

Every childcare organisation should have a copy of this book
Produced by UNICEF, this book illustrates children's rights as set out in the UN convention on the rights of the child. The text is simple enough to be understood by fairly young children but conveys its message very effectively. It is illustrated in a variety of styles, showing children from all over the world in different situations.
I have used this book both with the children attending my out-of-school club, and also with the staff to raise their awareness of what children in our care are entitled to expect of us. I would reccommend this to parents or anyone working with children not only as a beautiful picture book, but as an invaluable resource in a society where multicultural issues and the rights of children are becoming increasingly important.
A powerful reminder of our responsibility to children.
I actually bought this book as a christening gift.
There is a wonderful foreword by Archbishop Tutu hi-lighting how innocent children become victims of wars they do not understand and how we must ensure that we always protect them from such horrors.
Then as you start to read the book you are captivated by a beautiful double page illustration from leading authors and illustrators to accompany the ' rights of the child' statement that has been chosen.
The statements are a powerful reminder of our responsiblity to children and how we influence them on aspects of love, family values, religions, disabilities and friendships.
This book will become a firm favourite of children and adults and will be read time and time again. Indeed some of the statements could become bedtime prayers.
For every book purchased a donation is made to UNICEF and that gives you an even better feel good factor!
Wonderful
A must for anyone working with children or teaching adults to become childcare workers. Wonderful illustrations and words highlighting the rights of every child anywhere in the world
