FANTASTIC and great for anybody!
I am really enjoying Suzanne Deason's programme for women and would recommend it to any woman just starting out with yoga. I am sure lots of DVD routines would be difficult to follow and get to grips with for a beginner like me, so I am so glad I chose this one - completely at random, when I saw it for sale in my local Whole Foods shop! I didn't know what a yoga routine would be like, as I am completely new to it, but I am loving the way Suzanne has designed this like a kind of meditation specifically for women which is also a challenging work out. The whole experience of watching it and following it is relaxing: as you watch it you are absorbed into the coastline of Maui, and there is a wonderful gentle soundtrack running throughout. Suzanne gives very clear, slow instructions so that you can follow without constantly ruining your poses to look at the screen. You will have to look occasionally when the poses get more difficult, but the more you do the routine, the less this will happen. It is a really approachable yoga routine, which does not need a lot of props. I find all the extra things like blocks and straps really offputting on a lot of the DVDs out there, so thank you Suzanne for designing a programme that an average woman can do with just a yoga mat in the living room! Of course, all the accessories are mentioned in the DVD but she puts across the idea of real, practical yoga that anyone can do at any time of day without any hassle, so she makes it really workable and not this "elite" practise it looks like with so many yoga people. Also, Suzanne is not an egotist about her DVD: it is entirely focused on the yoga and on the women she is trying to teach, and is not about her appearance like so many "celebrity" DVDs. I really highly recommend this and am considering buying Suzanne's DVD designed for Stress Relief, but even if I don't, I will be so happy to continue with this one programme as it is just the right level of challenge, I think.
Most Effective
This is most effective programme. The scenery helps to attain your serenity. I am new to Yoga but still managed to complete the programme. I used my gym ball to make a couple of adjustments, but I still felt all the benefits of the moves. It is great to have something to aim for. There is even an extra programme to do at times of stress of fatigue and during your cycle.
I would recommend this programme without hesitation. Don't expect immediate results. Yoga is something you have to work at!
Feel energised, buy this!
For experts only! Exceedingly hard to follow
I am not a yoga expert but have been practising yoga on and off for years, and was looking for a video to help me to get back into regular practice. I've enjoyed using Leah Bracknell's 'Yoga and You' for a couple of weeks, and was looking for something a bit more intensive.
I found this video unsatisfactory in many respects.
Firstly, Suzanne Deason works very fast and is very flexible. Good for her, but there was a lack of time and explanation on how to enter and leave poses with brief, quickfire instructions like 'inhale, exhale, come up, down into brave warrior, left arm forward, exalted warrior, step back with the right foot, forward bend, release the neck, inhale, come up, hands to namaste, hands on the belly'. (This 'hands on the belly' is what makes it 'for women' as far as I can see!).
Most worryingly, her poses are extremely advanced and she includes no instructions on how us lesser mortals can modify them in the run of the workout. This could easily result in injuries to those who feel compelled to try and match what she's doing. There IS a section on modifying the poses, but this is just a sequence of stills of her using blocks and straps, with no instructions on how you are, for instance, supposed to get into the position of standing with your leg extended forwards with your foot in a strap. Plus, her workout gives you no time to grab your props if you need them, meaning that you will be forever reaching for the pause button. Hardly conducive to 'stilling the mind'.
The blurb on this says that Suzanne Deason helps you to focus on the breath, but the breathing instructions, seem like an afterthought - as do the modified poses.
I can't help feeling that this video is simply a medium to show how perfectly adept Suzanne Deason is after her 'lifetime of Yoga Practice' and what a lovely bit of beach she owns in Maui.
The music is a mixture of flute warblings and saccharine piano melodies which I found unappealing and repetitive. It reminded me of the muzak you get in the background on shopping channels.
