Amazon.co.uk Review
Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternate paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies which initially won Bocelli acclaim. The familiar cast of songwriter/collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time To Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il diavolo el'angelo". It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss Bocelli sings with a new-found, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'incontro", a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni", with its quotes from the composer's operas, Bocelli gives another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin
CD Description
The world's biggest selling classical artist (40 million sales worldwide), of whom Celine Dion claimed 'if God had a singing voice, it would sound like Andrea Bocelli', continues his hugely successful classical/pop crossover formula. 'Cieli Di Toscana' (Tuscan Skies) features the Italian tenor's self-penned 'Il Diavolo e l'Angelo' and a guest appearance from Bono on 'l'Incontro'.
Customer Reviews
Cieli di Toscana is breathtaking!
Without a shadow of a doubt I believe Cieli di Toscana is the finest pop album Andrea Bocelli has recorded, that's not to say Romanza and Sogno aren't wonderful, but this album is so beautiful it take's my breath away.
On this album are some of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear, they speak of the emotions of a father, a lover and the love of Tuscany. From the beginning to the end, Mr Bocelli treats us and teases us with his wonderful voice ranging perfectly as always from baritone to tenor. The use of the orchestra, piano, guitar, violin and the Coro in combination with Mr Bocelli also thrill me.
It's very hard to speak of favourites, but on the strength of one week...Melodramma, Se la Gente Usasse il Cuore, Si Volto', L'Incontro - a tribute to Andrea's first born son with an introduction poem by Bono of U2 fame, E Mi Manchi Tu (The Premio Bocelli 2001 winner) and the delightful Il Diavolo e l'Angelo (Written by Bocelli in the eighties) is a real swinging song!!! I have loved Opera and classical music since I was a child and very rarely listened to pop until I discovered Andrea Bocelli's voice. I know I will play Cieli di Toscana as many times as his classical and opera albums - La Boheme, Verdi, Sacred Arias... Well there's no need for me to go on, I have all of Andrea Bocelli's albums.
I thoroughly recommend Cieli di Toscana - you'll love it.
Beautiful music to relax with
I bought this CDfor my wife on Saturday morning and she listened to it that afternoon whilst preparing an evening meal for some friends, who are not especially classically minded!! When they saw it they poo pooed my choice but were enchanted by it when they heard the excellent quality and beauty of his voice. We firmly believe they are now converts and will in all possibility go out and buy this CD. A lovely evening was had by all enhanced only by this young man's wonderful voice. Thank you Senor Bocelli.
A great intro to this artist
This is the first album of Bocelli's that I have bought. The first few songs in particular are excellent - passionate and soaring music which perfectly complements Andrea Bocelli's voice. The rest of the album was slower to grow on me, but there is no track I really dislike. Bono's recitation of a poem was an interesting prologue to one of the songs, although I don't feel the duet with Helena came off, due to her voice in main. However, Bocelli makes singing seem as simple and natural as breathing, and that's how it should be.
