does what it says on the tin
The description is accurate and the greenhouse does what it needs to. It is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle to put together and the push fit junctions will split if you push the tubing in too far. (Hence 4 stars) The plastic is quite thick - much thicker than Gardsmans other smaller models and has green mesh effect to diffuse the sunlight.
Once assembled its fairly rigid. You can peg it to the ground or use guy ropes to tie it down. I screwed 4 eyelets into my patio wall and tied it onto those and its withstood quite strong winds.
There is just enough room for two adults inside pricking out seedlings. Its never going to replace a real glass greenhouse but its significantly more convenient than a simple cold frame.
Since I wrote the above I've gone through a hot summer. There is no way to ventilate except opening the door, without the door open temperatures go up above 50C very quickly. So you need to be diligent in opening the door. Or site it in a place where the sun doesn't get to it directly. Still a great buy though.
But now one of the zips has broken...so where do I get a new cover?
Another year on and the plastic had begun to deteriorate and holes are appearing in the mesh. Worse though was that we had a storm and it blew the whole thing down and broke some of the framework. I've since spent a lot more on a metal/polycarbonate greenhouse, and it also got blown apart by a gale! (But at least the frame stayed intact) So while I still recommend this, it won't last forever and if you are in a windy site (we are on top of a hill!) you should probably invest in something a lot stronger! At least it proved to me how useful a greenhouse is!
Why buy glass?...I've now found out why and i'll tell you!
Well, after waiting 36 days from order until delivery for this item (not very good amazon!), i have to say it was worth the wait. It's a good job i wasn't desperate for it as i would have cancelled.... a ridiculous wait time. But, at £45 it was much cheaper than the garden centre's at £60.
I am very pleased....it looks smart with a re-inforced green plastic cover, is sturdy and there is plenty of room for manouvre. It is very easy to erect, a nice 20 minute job in the sunshine. I have attached it to a fence panel and attached 2 guy lines, and it ain't gonna move anywhere. I have only 1 very small niggle in that one of the front zips is a bit hard to pull to close when it gets near the bottom, but no problem. I am new to growing your own veg and this is just a great starter size, to see if you're gonna like it. For me.....Why buy a glass one?
UPDATE: SPRING 07 Well it has been up for nearly a year now and there are a few wear holes appearing where the cover is taut over the frame at the top....it wont tear because of the cross pattern on it, however it is a bit disappointing that holes have appeared already.
UPDATE: SPRING 08 Well...why buy glass? i'll tell you why...because this so called greenhouse is now riddled with holes and is completely useless...it has been binned!! The frame is fine, but i've looked everywhere on't internet and cannot find a replacement cover!! How useless is that...Am not so impressed anymore, it was good while it lasted (2 summers), you get what you pay for don't you.
I need a new cover
I bought this item four years ago. I have no space for a proper greenhouse except the most compact. Since buying this walk-in greenhouse I have hade good times and bad. In the beginning it was great. I could plant a great variety of plants on the ample shelves. The first two years were brilliant. I even grew cucumbers and chillies!
You do have to be vigilant in hot weather and I installed a thermometer which had to be checked at regular intervals, very difficult when you are at work all day! I used to just open the door in the morning before I left.
Since then, over the past two years the cover has deteriorated and is now just full of holes. I cannot get the same growing environment. I hope Gardman reads these reviews. I expected a replacement cover to be available as I am loathe to buy a whole new greenhouse! If not for the fact that a replacment cover is still not available I would have given this five stars.
