Appropriate for teaching assistants at NVQ level 2
I found the book a great supliment to the information you aquire on the course. As the book is based on the GNVQ level 2 I felt the the information was very helpful and of an appropriate level, seeing as the course is aimed at students who either aim to become a teaching assistant, are new to the job or want to back up their experience with a recognised qualification. I also thought it would be of great use to those that are thinking of becoming a teaching assistant. Really useful book!
Disappointing
A long awaited book to accompany the NVQ2. The book is well presented and the standards for the NVQ are clearly marked at the beginning of chapters but not embedded into the text. As a tutor of this course I was disappointed by the books contents, I found them in places over simplified and at times patronising for teaching assistants. (I thought TA's taught children how to carry scissors safely I don't think they need to be shown how to do it for themsleves!!) I was also not impressed that the book was soley aimed at primary level, Teaching Assistants from secondary schools also study this course.
A Superb Book
In response to C. Dodd's review, I would like to point out the following: This book was written in 2003, when the Teaching Assistant Standards were first introduced. At Level 2, these are the standards that assistants are required to reach. The course is aimed at those who are new to the job: for experienced teaching assistants, the NVQ3 course is more appropriate, and goes into the role in more depth. The range of qualifications are designed to reflect the range of ability and experience which teaching assistants have, which varies enormously. Your misguided comments should be aimed at those who set the course rather than those who write material for it. Shame on the writer of the below review is more appropriate - myself and others on my course found this book a really useful resource.
