A traditional family cookbook
Annie Bell writes refreshingly clearly, and makes everything feel straightforward and simple.
This is a very traditional family cookbook, with recipes for toad in the hole, roast chicken and macaroni cheese alongside more sophisticated fare, like pea, feta and basil tart, or mussel cod and tomato pie.
There is a section on feast days, with lots of Christmas and Easter recipes, and another section on food for children's parties.
Not every recipe is illustrated, but the pictures in the book are attractive and helpful.
Bell never over-complicates recipes, which is confidence inspiring. The recipes in this book are not as exciting as in "Living and Eating" but this would make a good first cookbook for someone, or for someone looking for inspiration for straightforward family recipes.
