Very disappointed
In the late 1960's I used to play harmonica in a band and I had a full set of 12 Hohner Echo Super Vampers (UK equivalent of the US Marine Band). The sound was great, but over time moisture caused the wooden comb to warp. I had expected these new Hohner harmonicas with their plastic bodies to have solved the moisture problem and so be at least as good. Was I in for a surprise!

The first thing I noticed was "Made in China", not Germany. Well that may still be alright, I had a cheap "Victory" harmonica that I bought in China and it was not bad for the price I'd paid. However, as soon as I tried to play these I was appalled. The cover plates are not metal but slightly rough textured plastic, so they cling to your lips, inhibiting free movement. They don't seal properly against the reed plates either so there is substantial air leakage. In fact if you hold the harmonica up you can see daylight through the gap. Finally, the reeds seem to need much more air. This all adds up to harmonicas that are really hard work to play.

I had expected better things of Hohner. I'm surprised that they are willing to put their name to harmonicas of such poor quality. I guess you get what you pay for, but I would have been prepared to pay a lot more for a decent set rather than these kids' toys.

The silver lining to this cloud is that Amazon have been really good about returning them. Absolutely no quibbles and even though I'm in Cyprus at present, they have agreed to refund the carriage charges back to the UK rather than waiting until I return in three months time. 10/10 for first class customer service.
