Review
Redmond O'Hanlon burst on the travel writing scene with Into the Heart of Borneo, a brilliant, hair-raising and hilarious account of the misadventures of O'Hanlon and his hapless companion, the poet James Fenton. When O'Hanlon asked Fenton if he would do it again, he was told; 'I would not travel with you as far as High Wycombe'. The foil for Redmond's craziness in this volume is an American academic called Lary (sic) Schaffer. In pursuit of a mystical quasi-dinosaur monster supposedly living in the waters of Lake Tele in central West Africa, the pair endure testicle-biting fish, tropical ulcers, and the usual attacks of diarrhoea and vomiting. O'Hanlon is less interested in telling us what the place he is visiting is like than he is in making our flesh creep with tales of head-shrinking and sorcery. Great vicarious fun. (Kirkus UK)
