The Pale Criminal is set in 1938, just before the outbreak of war, and by the final disturbingly bleak novel German Requiem, set in 1947, the atrocities of Nazi behaviour become apparent, as Bernie uncovers a nightmare landscape which contains more death than he could ever have imagined.
