A perfect meeting of composition, orchestra and conductor
I had the privilege of being in Berlin to hear one of the concerts that were recorded for this CD and the impact was unique in my experience.
It is only a pity that the performance of Schubert's "Unfinished" - another Wand speciality - from the first half of the concert has not also been commercially released.
Reviewers across Europe have already singled this recording out as the finest to have been made of this powerful yet haunting valedictory work.
There is no conductor active today who knows more about Bruckner than Wand, and he has never drawn upon that long lifetime of experience to more potent effect.
The pacing of the work, with detailed dynamics and more rubato than one might expect, is immensely powerful - shatteringly so in some respects. The playing of this great orchestra is magnificently caught by the RCA engineers and it is hard to imagine a better Bruckner recording ever being made.
A real Desert Island Disc.
Wonderful ! Don't miss this one
This symphony is my favorite one of Bruckner (he is my favorite composer). I heard other versions of this symphony (Solti, Jochum, Tinter, Giulini). Until now, Giulini' version was the one I liked the most (the brass section sounds very good). But now, I must admit that the new Wand version is probably better. The tempo is the right one (Giulini's one is much slower, particularly in the third movement) and the sound is very good for a «live» recording (maybe not as good as for the new Wand' Bruckner symphony no. 4, a «live» recording too).
P.S. : I ordered this CD from Amazon UK because I didn't find it (yet) anywhere in U.S or in Canada. And I don't regret it ! Don't miss this one !
Great Bruckner
I want to echo the thoughts of the other 2 reviewers. I have not heard such a good recording of Bruckner's 9th symphony on record since Karajan.
The BPO's playing here is even better. I must say this is the best playing I have ever heard in this symphony. The BPO sound better than ever. Mr. Wand detail and natural approach to the music is amazing. A disc for the ages.
