Part two of the epic saga.5
In season 2 of North and South, America is in the midst of civil war. The Hazards and the Mains are on opposite sides and the friendship between Orry and George is stretched to the limits as they both battle for what they believe in. Brett Main has married Billy Hazard but the young couple are torn apart by the fighting. Ashton Main, as spoiled and selfish as ever, spends her time trying to ruin the relationships of others, and having an affair with Elkanah Bent (her brother Orry's greatest enemy). Virgilia, George's abolitionist sister, crosses the line from fervour into an obsession that will forever ruin her.
The story shifts between the issues of war and the relationships affected by it and manages to maintain a good balance between the two. Many famous faces feature in this mini series, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Lloyd Bridges, Olivia de Havilland, Kirstie Alley and Robert Mitchum to name but a few.
Absorbing and entertaining, well worth a look.

civil war epic.5
An epic production set in mid 1800's America. The story is about two families, the Mains and the Hazards. Orry Main and George Hazard become lifelong friends after meeting at Westpoint military academy. The only problem is, Orry is from a wealthy southern family that own a plantation and numerous slaves whilst George is from a rich northern family to whom slavery is an abhorrence. Over the years friendships and relationships build between the families but war is brewing between the North and South. Where will this leave the friends when they have to fight on opposite sides of a bloody and protracted war.
This 'made for TV' production is as entertaining now as it was when it first aired in the 80's. Although there are no extra's on the DVD (apart from subtitles), the story itself makes it a worthwhile purchace. Highly recommended.

Fond memories5
When North and South first aired I was still at school and was the only one that fancied Patrick Swayze (of course no-one knew who he was or how you pronounced his surname). No, all my friends fancied James Read. Like me you probably only watched North and South because your Nan or mum wanted to. After watching it on TV and taping it every time its come round again since, this is an absolute pleasure. A crackle and fuzz free version of the lavish production about the American Civil War, told through the friendship of 2 wealthy young men. One from the industrial north, the other from an aristocratic southern family, their friendship epitomises the sadness and tragedy to come. The production differs in a number of ways from John Jakes epic novel but is far more entertaining and well paced. This has just the right mix of drama, action, history and romance to keep both sexes interested throughout and begging for the next instalment (order book 2 now!!)
