WHY PLAY GAMES ?

Is it just me - or have we become so bound up in the specifics and details of what and how we teach that we’ve lost that intangible stuff that actually made things fun? I think that maybe we have.

We’ve ended up hiding behind the pseudo science of teaching, games have become periods of practice, trying it on both sides is now called bi-lateral practice, ENOUGH!! Good teaching is an art - it has to be an art because it’s about changing how people feel - just like music, poetry and photography. We know that if we feel happy we learn more, we become confident and feel better in ourselves, indeed we are less likely to become ill or to injure ourselves. PLAYING GAMES MAKES THINGS FUN!

As a professional coach I use games, sometimes disguised as exercises, or hidden by a thin veneer of adult seriousness because they work. You can find a game that works well in almost any water situation or weather condition. The venue may be a city, open lake, the sea, white water river, or even indoors in the small, confined area of a swimming pool. It is even possible to play some canoe games without any water!

The main point is that games are fun and people enjoy them. Paddlers loosen up, stop worrying about how silly they might look or how wet they may get. Many games can be used either during a particular session or to make a specific location more interesting. They give all paddlers confidence in their relationship with their equipment and in the environment.

It’s a human characteristic that as we become successful at something our confidence grows and as our confidence grows it helps us go beyond that original area of success. Games develop confidence because a successful game is simply fun.
