Beautifully illustrated
These lavishly illustrated guidebooks are always a pleasurable read - every page has several colour photographs and there are annotated illustrations of the main sights. The maps are in full colour and are extensive and easy to read. This guide covers all of mainland Spain plus the Canary and Balearic Islands.
In terms of size it's not the smallest or lightest of guides, but considering it covers a whole country it could be a lot bigger. It's certainly good for planning trips even if you don't want to carry it with you. There's not as much detailed practical and travel information as in some other guidebooks, but all the essentials are there. There's more information on restaurants and hotels than in previous editions; this can be found at the end of the book.
But the real strength of the book is in its main sightseeing sections. Everything is so well illustrated, it can be much more helpful when navigating around than a more densely written text. Need to find your way around a Cathedral? There's a floorplan showing the location of all the most significant features. Wondering what sort of bird that is? Turn to the flora and fauna section for pictures.
The language section is comprehensive but the print is tiny, so I would recommend taking an additional phrasebook with you. There is something of an emphasis on cities, with a whole separate section for Barcelona and for Madrid, but I think that is partly due to its particular focus on architectural and cultural sights. It would not be such a useful book for travellers planning on going off the beaten track or focussing on activities such as walking in rural areas.
Eyewitness Travel Guide to Spain
This is the perfect book for home browsing, lovely pictures and excellent coverage of all areas likely to be of interest to a visitor.
However, its heavy weight does rather tell against taking it with you!
A Must Have
This guide is in my opinion the very best book to take when visiting Spain, it is informative full interesting facts, places to stay, places to eat, and wonderful places of interest to visit. I wouldnt be without this book. Highly recommended
