Amazon.co.uk Review
Bill Murray is in his early-career, shambling glory as Hunter S. Thompson, the gonzo journalist with a fondness for Wild Turkey and firearms. While Murray does not do as exact an impersonation of Thompson as Johnny Depp (in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), he does capture Thompson's dazed, anarchic nature. Unfortunately, the movie around him is just anarchic: a series of episodes (true or invented) from Dr. Thompson's career, circa 1968-72. The haphazard structure is probably meant to suggest the spirit of the counterculture or something, but it's just flabby storytelling. Thanks to Murray's blissful delivery, there are scenes that have a stoned giddiness to them: Thompson and his attorney (Peter Boyle) terrifying an unsuspecting hitchhiker, or Thompson alone in a men's room with Richard Nixon. Neil Young contributes some music, and Murray warbles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" while drunkenly piloting a plane. --Robert Horton
Synopsis
A zany comedy story of an off-the-wall journalist who tries to fulfil his writing deadlines whilst battling against the effects of powerful self-administered drugs.

Not as good as Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
...dont stop there...
This film is great for any HST fan. i'm also a huge fan of Bill Murray so, really, this is an ideal film for me.
It's quite a similar story to FLILV including drug abuse and all-round craziness and the soundtrack is amazing too.
Buy this film - it's cheap and you'll love it.
Keep Gonzo Alive!
A must for HST fans
I didnt think anyone else could play the good doctor after seeing Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing, but Murray pulls it off awsome. There dosnt really have to be a plot to it as its more just about the madness Thompson gets himself into.
If your a fan of Hunter S Thompson like me and you liked Fear and Loathing which is an absolute classic, then this is a must. Quality !
Worst Bill Murray film ever?
I don't know how to describe how bad this film really is. 1 star really is too much a rating for this nightmare of film-making.
It actually tarnishes the great reputation Bill Murray has in my eyes, and there are big reasons why most people haven't heard of this film. There's no plot, literally. He just rambles and mumbles random nonsense for the entire film with ridiculous situations involving midget bellhops and stoned hippies, all with incoherent gibberish and shouting. It is actually tragic to see that someone so great started out so badly.
It should be good because it has BM in it and that usually is a reason for me wanting to see a film. However it's the biggest let-down of any film I've expected to be decent.
I suspect that because the film is supposedly telling the story of a prescription-drugged journalist, people will say that people on drugs are a lot like this, in which case it makes a very good anti-drug movie. Just a very poor movie for fans of comedy, 60's/70's nostalgia, Bill Murray and film in general.
If you enjoy films, don't buy this horrible piece of work.
