Amazon.co.uk Review
Director Clint Eastwood's 1997 box-office hit stars himself as Luther Whitney, a highly skilled thief who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, witnessing the murder of a woman involved in a secret tryst with the US president (played by Gene Hackman). Determined to clear his name, Whitney cleverly eludes a tenacious detective (Ed Harris) while investigating a corruption of power reaching to the highest level of government. Adapted by veteran screenwriter William Goldman from David Baldacci's novel, this thriller balances expert suspense with well-drawn characters and an intelligent plot that's just a pounding heartbeat away from real White House headlines. Absolute Power features the great Judy Davis in a memorable supporting role as the White House chief of staff who desperately attempts to cover up the crime. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Synopsis
In this slick political thriller, an emotionally disconnected, aesthetically refined master thief is out for one final score before retiring to his treasure-lined hideaway. But during a robbery at a mansion near Washington, he witnesses a bizarre sex murder involving the President of the United States. As the president's slimy handlers frantically cover the crime up, the career criminal--and only outside witness--becomes the Secret Service's prime target. His relationship with his estranged daughter hangs in the balance. Adapted from the best-selling novel by David Baldacci.

Underrated Eastwood4
This is one of those many Eastwood movies that are left in the shadow of his more accomplished works like Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby etc. This one may not reach quite to the same level with those films, but still this is a movie of great skill and workmanship. Hard to find another thriller that has this much warmth and humanity without having to sacrifice the aspects of exitement. This one has a great cast; Eastwood, Hackman, Judy Davis, Laura Linney, Ed Harris, Scott Glenn etc. They all give great performances. This one is a small classic.

All setup, no payoff2
It's been said that Clint Eastwood only has two different speeds as a director - slow and even slower. With Absolute Power he's on the verge of comatose, kicking off with the most tedious robbery in screen history which very, very slowly turns into an even less interesting overlong murder scene that owes so much to No Way Out it even features Gene Hackman. After half an hour of endless underlit boredom setting up the plot, it plods along with no urgency or interest other than finishing on schedule and under budget. Aside from one affable scene with Ed Harris, the supporting cast (aside from an abysmal Judy Davis) for once outshine Eastwood, but they're competing for a picture that really isn't worth stealing.

Excellent!5
How a president while killing his lover, shakes up the life of everyday of an ordinary burglar. And how does the ordinary burglar brings down the president...
