Marking time
First of all, I'd like to state quite categorically that I am a big fan of James Blunt so it is quite hard to write an objective review of this (for me) essential purchase. Having said that I give the album four stars rather than five...
The first disc is a DVD recording of an excellent set recorded for the BBC. When I saw the broadcast, there were interviews with James between the songs which are mercifully absent here so you get the whole show uninterrupted complete with tracks that were not originally broadcast. The songs are great reproductions of the now famous album tracks complete with orchestral accompaniment on some songs and some nice guitar and keyboard licks spacing out songs such as 'So long Jimmy'. Highlights for me are undoubtably 'High', 'Tears and rain', 'Goodbye my lover' and 'You're beautiful'.
Also on disc one are all the videos for the single releases plus some short films showing the making of and some interviews. There are two videos for 'High' of which I prefer the first, shot on Tenerife near Mount Teide featuring James buried in the sand up to his head with some surreal characters appearing. The video for 'You're beautiful' where James jumps into the water from a great height is a classic understated, but dramatic interpretation of a definitive song for the year 2005.
Disc two features an audio concert recorded in Ireland and it's here that the set disappoints a little. Some of the songs are given a stripped down treatment such as 'High' and 'Tears and rain' and for me lack the power of the originals or the versions featured on the BBC DVD on Disc one. Plus points are tracks not on the 'Back to Bedlam' album but previously released as b-sides. These are 'Sugar coated', 'Fall at your feet' and the tremendous finale 'Where is my mind ?' with its Coldplay like chorus. This song provides a fitting climax to the show and is also on the live DVD.
The packaging is adequate without being spectacular and I think in summary the release was an inevitable outcome following the huge success of 'Back to Bedlam' and 'You're beautiful' and will satisfy most fans clamouring for more product from James Blunt in the space before the inevitable follow up album. So load disc one into your DVD player, crank up the volume and enjoy a flawless performance of some great songs.
REally, really good!
I remember watching the BBC concert a few months back when it was broadcast and immediately wanted to watch it again once it had finished. Now I have my wish much to my and i'm sure many Blunt fans' delight.
Technically, this should be the one of the top selling albums of the year! I can't see how anyone who has purchased Back to Bedlam would not want to buy this brilliant CD/DVD release. It presents James Blunt at his best - live.
This release supports the case yet further of the growing musical talent of James Blunt. All I can say is that if you liked Back to Bedlam, buy this!!
worth buying even if you bought back to bedlam
This is pretty good, even if you bought 'back to bedlam'.Although it seems like a repeat of this, there are 3 new tracks on the cd, and he sounds great live(which you can't say about a lot of bands)On the bonus dvd, the extras are cool. The videos and making of are interesting. The only thing I was disappointed with, was that on the dvd live concert at the bbc (which i recorded off the tv) they missed a song off, called 'i really want you'. I thought it was one of the best songs, and unfortunately they didn't put it on the bonus dvd.So if i want to listen to this i have to put on the recording i made off the tv.Still if you like James Blunt or watching a 'live performance' this could be for you.
