    Great value printer5
I purchased this printer because I had a HP all-in-one and the print quality was simply not good enough for printing photos.

The print quality of the Epson R285 is excellent. I printed a family photo for my Nan and she couldn't believe it wasn't a professional print.

It is true that the first set of ink cartridges you use run out fairly quickly but it does tell you this in the paperwork that comes with the printer. The replacement ink cartridges do not run out as quickly.

The fact it also prints on to CDs/DVDs is an added bonus. The software that comes with this makes it very easy to achieve.

All-in-all, I think this is a great printer and it is very affordable as well.

OK, this printer has been much maligned. The print quality is outstanding but here's some things to bear in mind:

    1. It drinks ink with quite some appetite

    2. The head cleaning did not work at first - I resorted to forcing 2cc of Tesco window cleaning fluid down the print spike using a syringe and plastic tube. That sorted it and it's been fine since.

Even the prices of non-Epson cartridges are expensive. I have decided on a continuous ink system and this is an easy-install. Far more economical, and you get to see just how much this printer drinks the ink.
When the printer says 'Need more ink' you pop the 'cartridges' out off their electrical contacts and then pop them back in again - hey presto it's full.

If you're looking for excellent, cheap prints this combination is unbeatable. If you use cartridges, perhaps look elsewhere.

I purchased my Epson R285 after my R200 got a little tired. Compared with the R200 the print quality is far superior, even with compatable catridges, you must make sure that if your machine was manufactured after April 2007, you must use the latest chipped cartridges. Also bear in mind the genuine cartridges supplied with printers are not full ones. Downside? the Epson print CD software supplied would not load so I used the old R200 disc, no more problems.
