World War II Nostalgia5
This is a superb CD and DVD that brings back many memories for those that remember personally the war years. A great set of toe tapping songs and a well restored DVD of the various artists. I heartily recommend it

GOOD VALUE WARTIME MEMORIES ON CD AND DVD4
This Decca release contains both a CD and a DVD recalling the 1939-1945 World War and is very good value. The CD is made up of generally familiar items which have, in the main, been reissued many times before. The voice of Winston Churchill is heard during the compilation, but the emphasis is clearly on the popular songs of the time and the great artists who kept up morale in those dark and difficult days. You can't really go wrong with singers and entertainers of the calibre of Dame Vera Lynn, Flanagan and Allen, The Andrews Sisters and so on. The best versions of songs have been included with a few exceptions. Certainly, as a British release, Anne Shelton's celebrated recording of "I'll Be Seeing You" would have been more appropriate than that of Bing Crosby. The accompanying booklet contains a glaring error. The Bob Hope recording of "Thanks For The Memory" included here is not the one he made in 1938 with Shirley Ross as claimed in the notes, but rather a wartime recording probably taken from a radio show!

The DVD runs for almost 70 minutes and the documentary dates from 1994. Dame Vera presents some commentary between film complations and it is a joy to see film of George Formby, Gracie Fields, Kenneth Horne, Richard Murdoch, the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, and Jack Buchanan - to name a few. There are two clips of Flanagan and Allen; the first clearly made post-war with, it appears, Jack Hylton conducting the pit orchestra. There are lots of clips from newsreels which show civilians and forces personnel with well-chosen recordings by Anne Shelton, Vera Lynn, Eddie Cantor and others providing a musical background to the moving pictures. It's just a pity that the listing of recordings at the end was not properly proofed as there are some glaring spelling mistakes...

This release benefits the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, which is a good reason to get a copy.
