Let down by the USB connectors
I bought this drive (not via Amazon) for backing up various PCs and Macs at home. The drive works fine but the connecting cable is a potential problem. At the computer end it needs TWO USB 2 ports, to guarantee an adequate power supply. (One some systems you may get away without the second connection but my MacBook doesn't seem to provide enough current from a single port so I need both). I find that the computer only recognises the drive if I connect the cable to both USB ports before plugging it in to the Iomega drive.
The socket on the end of the drive casing is of the micro USB type usually found on cameras and PDAs. This socket does not grip the cable and it is easily dislodged, which is a significant drawback for a lightweight portable device. A replacement cable might perform better, but due to the need for twin connectors at the computer end this might be difficult to track down.
Completely Useless
I bought this product brand new from Dell to go with my new laptop (and to help with transferring my files across). Brand new out of the box it was recognised by Windows as being 'Corrupted and not recognised'. After going round in circles with Iomega technical support they finally acknowledged that the drive was defective and offered to 'let' me send it back at my cost to the Netherlands - where their technical department is. They also gave me the option of sending them twenty Euros in exchange for a prepaid return label.
I agree with all the other reviews on the internet about the USB cable. This drive requires two USB ports (on the same side of the computer) which I was not aware of when I bought it. The USB cable is very short and very poor quality, and difficult to find a replacement for as it is a 'Y' cable. The connection to the drive itself is very loose and comes out extremely easily - the drive does not grip the cable in the slightest!
Overall I am very disappointed with the drive and Iomega themselves. I am now in the process of trying to get Dell to accept the drive back so I can have a refund (I don't want another one of these!!!) or at least an exchange so I can have a different manufacturer.
Not sure what the Fuss is about.......
I have had one of these for ages, it was a perfect product to transfer data to my Sony PS3 and touch wood none of the issues mentioned here have effected mine. Works on my Mac book Pro with only 1 cable and also on my HP Windows based PC. Not sure why all the fuss really. Have used the Sony controller cable nearly every time with no issues. I would buy another one. oh and it looks slick! You decide.......
