Displaying hope, almost delivering perfection5
Theirs a saying Apple stick by... When they're good, they're amazing. When they're bad, they're really bad. And more often than not, the 'bad' usually comes from an emphasis on compact design rather than quality and value. Perhaps the current 20" iMac is a great example; a beautiful machine that should be appropriate for graphic designers (we used them for years in college) like it's previous generation model. Think again; the screen gradient is that poor that the display produces lighter, more washed out images at the bottom of the screen than the top. By using these lower quality components, Apple can get away with a slimmer designer and still claim it boasts millions of colours and gorgeous results (incorrect; it displays just under 250,000 colours, and the result is un-appropriate for designers). It begs one to wonder why Apple still sell these machines as multimedia platforms...

So when Apple do it good... It's almost fantastic. Enter their new full HD LED display screen. Aside from the silver/white back panel, it's design almost mimic's the current iMacs design, which leaves me to understanding why an LED screen of such quality is almost as thick as the iMac... Because it houses quality components, unlike it's poor desktop counterpart.

USB ports are available on the back like the previous generation, and in turn this requires one USB plug to be inserted on your Mac to transfer the data. This is extermerly handy if you want to keep external HDD's under your screen and keep your Mac to just temporary devices. Although the previous Cinema Display had this feature, it's been extended which can't be bad. A MagSafe power plug has also been incorporated which is obviously fantastic for MacBooks (because you can't overcharge the battery), and the Mini Display Port. Not Mini DVI...

But lets cut to the chase - it's not perfect. Otherwise, those clever clogs at Apple would have devised a longer Mini Display Port cable that could reach a Mac Pro sitting on your floor. Not such the case - if you want the screen to reach a Mac Pro, it'll have to be sitting on top of your desk. Given the humungous nature of this machine, I find it quite worrying that Apple expect one to place it on top of a desk, with no regard for weight of size.

After all, whats the biggest market of users who are going to be wanting a screen more... Desktop or MacBook owners?

This is perhaps a kick in the teeth further because Apple offered a gorgeous 20 inch screen only earlier this year that had the long cable. Now it's been discontinued.

Though when it comes to features, this screen absolutely wins. Built in iSight cam, speakers, microphone... These were never present on any Apple screen previously, and so they are very much welcomed. Though again - if this is supposedly marketed for the MacBook products and not the Mac Pro, why have they not allowed these features to built in if the MacBook's already have them? It would make far more sense to either just extend the Video cable, or have an extra model just for MacBook owners (without the features, equalling a lower price).

It's a shame they cost so much, but this is also partly down to manufacturing costs; not Apple getting cheekier by the year (though I wouldn't wave away the notion). Saving the environment unfortunately has the opposite affect on our wallets, and so although the aluminum and glass housing is beautiful, it may be worth while shopping around to make sure this is the display for you. Because unless you take great notice of colour composition or do professional work, the chances are you may not appreciate the quality of the screen aside from it's functionality with Mac's.

One question still remains, though. Do you go for this display or the previous generation? You may be surprised to hear that I'd actually still opt for the previous model - the anti-glare screen still provided excellent colour saturation even without the glass, and of course it's much cheaper due to different manufacturing methods. Never the less, this new Cinema Display is LED and so offers better, more responsive performance as a professional graphics platform.

Apple 24" LED Cinmema Monitor5
This my first Apple Monitor, having had the excellent 20" Dell screens before.
Walking around stores looking at the various screens the Apple LED sticks out as the best. Its very sharp, beautiful colours. I have the latest Mac Book Pro and the leads supplied with the screen link to the laptop providing it with power as well as the digital screen connection. I'm new to Mac's. The bluetooth keyboard and Mighty Mouse set up easily. With the Mac open the desktop goes from laptop screen to 24", you can drag between them. wierd! With the laptop closed after some seconds the screen springs to life. It wakes up on moving the mouse or hitting the keyboard.

This is the best monitor I've had in 20 years. They keep getting better, the new LED screens are the current biz.

simply brilliant - literally5
I'm going to be lazy by referring the reader to 'Top Cat Tom's' review of this product because I wholeheartedly agree with it. This display works hand-in-glove with an Apple MacBook Pro. The only things I'd add to TCT's review are the following: I have a lot of voice and video conferences with my work, and the audio output, microphone input and webcam video quality offered by this display are top-notch. The same components on the host Macbook Pro are pretty good, but the ones on the display are even better. Putting the speakers on the bottom edge and the microphone on the top edge is no doubt one reason why using this display as part of a speakerphone is so good. Callers comment on the high quality of my voice and do not complain about echo even when I've cranked up the volume. Last things to note: it even works with my Windows7 partition on my MacBook Pro, and HD movies displayed on this screen look so much better than from the Philips LCD TV connected to my Apple Mac Mini in the living room.
