Customer Reviews
This book had inadequate description but good on the whole.
The war game was superbly written about World War 1 with the main charachters Will, Freddie, Lacey and Billy. All four of them were really brave to go and fight in the war.
This book shows how hard it was to live in the trenches. Every so often they had to be on sentry duty and had to stand on the fire step. However it was a shame this book had inadequate description of the apauling conditions the men had to suffer.
I felt the book had too many pictures and not enough narrative.
I would reccommend this book to 7-12 year olds because there was no complicated language.
The author of this book was Michael Foreman.
Overall War Game is a heartwarming and adventureous story.
In all my book reading days never have I read a truley adventurous, heartwarming and historic book cramped superbly into an excellent story. The four lifelike characters in this story (Fred, Billy, Lacey, and Will) feel they need an adventure (and they picked the right story!) They join the army for they thought that it would be fun.Little did they know they were wrong... It gives a tremendous feel and interest, not just for the army but lives of people in the villages.
Michael Foreman has superb historic knowledge and it is greatly used in this epic tale. Winner of the Grand Prix Smarties Prize he will hopefully get more of his most acheived awards.
I would recommend this to the middle aged child up to the elderly. It is easy to follow and is a joy to read. The illustrations give ideal pictures of life in the trenches, at home and around the villages. I don't often read historic storys but this is a book for keeps.Forever.
The War Game is about four boys who decide to go to the war.
The War Game is about four enthusiastic young boys who decide to go off to the war. Will, Lacey, Billy and Freddie think it is going to be an exciting experience and will be over by Christmas. To their surprise it isn't anything like what they expected.
I really liked reading this book as Michael Foreman has added some excellent pictures. My favourite bit of the book is when they go to enlist because I liked the way Michael Foreman described the scenes. I think anyone who is between the ages of eight and twelve can read it because it has really simple language in it.
This book really reflects what it would be like in the first World War.
