Customer Reviews
Pure magic
we took this audiocassette on tour whilst driving through France with the kids - pure magic - both the action packed plotlines of the story and the well articulated ethics greatly impressed my children - and the stories of knightly valour and chivalry retold with such authority that this cassette is far and away the favourite in car listening for us.
Arrrrrrgh!
Beware! This version is abridged. I should have realised, many of the Penguin Audiobooks are. This one is BADLY abridged. A number of key chapters, stories of specific knights are simply omitted. Worst of all, you get the stories of Lancelot and Perceval in their quests for the Grail, and then Galahad's successful quest is cut!!! It's just reduced to a couple of sentences added on to the end of Perceval's tale saying "and in time Galahad did go on to find the Grail." Deeply disappointing. What there is, is great, but if you buy and listen to this version, you'll feel like you've read a tatty paperback only to find key chapters and pages have blown away in the wind. Seek out an unabridged version.
History books should be written like this.
I read this book when I was 11 or 12 and still consider myself an expert on Authurian legend. I told my brothers to read it and there developed an intense competition to be the first to wake up in the morning and grab the thing. I hope that the 'religious' magic of the book has not been drained to suit the common perception of modern boys' palates (for this reprint).
