This 2007 edition of the Oxford Junior Illustrated Dictionary features over 10,000 entries in alphabetical order, in a clear and accessible design, with many new photographs and illustrations. Each page is colourful, clear and accessible: simple, easy-to-read numbered meanings, and word classes. There are also panels that focus on overused words, words belonging to the same family and key language features such as connectives or apostrophes. Another unique feature is the example sentences by well-known children's authors, such as Dick King-Smith, Jacqueline Wilson and Roald Dahl. These show the words actually in use to reinforce meaning but they also hook children in to using language effectively. Unique to Oxford, they take children beyond looking up a word for spelling or meaning - and into thinking about reading and writing independently. The full alphabet appears on every page with a coloured tab on the letter of the page - plus the dictionary quartiles are picked out in a vibrant colour. Together, these are invaluable navigation tools for the child practising their alphabet skills. Guidewords also appear on every page. Extra material at the back is accurately levelled for the curriculum at this age. It includes information for spelling success, punctuation, simple grammar, key overused words (with alternatives) as well as word origins, prefixes and suffixes.

5-7 age range rather than 7+
Personally, I was disappointed with this dictionary. My main criticism is regarding its 7+ age recommendation on the cover.
My daughter is 6 and a half and now that she's reading books such as Roald Dahl's at school she is encountering a range of vocabulary that is all new to her. So I decided that a new tool -a dictionary, better if it was illustrated to make it more accessible- was needed. Teaching her how to use it took a couple of minutes, but after that she kept on looking for words that simply weren't there (today for example she couldn't find "presume", "pucker up", "overwhelm", "speedometer", "ignition", etc).
A warning note to potential buyers would be that most children aged 6 upwards will no doubt know most of the terminology included and if the child in question is even only a little ahead of the school curriculum, this is not the dictionary for them in spite of the publisher's age bracket classification. Some of the bonus pages at the back of the book are even more lacking: they picture and name fruits and vegetables, body parts, basic opposites, shapes, numbers, days of the week... some of our baby and toddler books had exactly the same information!
That is not to say is not a good dictionary, I like the clear layout, the occasional illustrations, the simple explanations and examples, and although I considered exchanging it for a more advanced one, I've decided that we will keep it, but for my four year old when she's a bit older...
Helping with Learning Difficulties.
This Dictionary is an excellent Teaching device for people with learning difficulties. It serves the need to help with the learning and meanings of words. Pictorial description to help those who need something extra and to add to the interest of the reader. Neat, concise and easy to follow. A first class Junior Dictionary at a very reasonable price.
Superb dictionary
I bought this for my son who is 7. He loves it. There is a good variety of words with age appropriate descriptions. An easy to use layout and just enough pictures. He likes to sit and read it.
