loses usability quickly
this is a good starting point for people starting to learn Italian. However, it quickly becomes obsolete as the learners range of vocabulary broadens and command of the language increases; this dictionary, unfortunately, rapidly fails to provide the words the learner wishes to look up. Good for taking into the classroom, but you'd probably be better of bying one of the larger editions initially, especially if you are already skilled in using a dictionary
NO PRONUNCIATIONS OF ITALIAN WORDS !!!
This reviews the FIRST EDITION (2002)
A beautifully laid-out dictionary (with the each headword given in blue on a line to itself), it is easy to read, and very pleasant on the eye. It has plenty of very helpful example sentences, given in both languages. It would be a fantastic dictionary for beginners if it wasn't for the fact that there is NO PRONUNCIATION given for the Italian words!!
English pronunciations *are* given, and this makes it look like a dictionary produced for Italians, which has been put out for sale on the English market. For Italians starting to learn English, I give this dictionary five stars.
There are grammar notes for both Italian and English readers.
Collins Italian Dictionary
I find this dictionary very easy to use, with good sentence examples given. Use of blue and black fonts make it easy on the eye. The "Italian in Action" section is very useful - examples of letter writing, e-mail composing, etc.
The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars, is that there is no guide to pronunciation, accent stresses, etc. in the main body of the dictionary.
However, still a very good dictionary!
