The EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM has proven very popular with professional and advanced amateur photographers since it was introduced in 1995. However, the increasing use of digital cameras, most having sensors smaller than a 35mm film frame, has increased the demand for a high-performance standard zoom lens with a wider wide-angle setting. The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens meets this need. The optical design is based on the previous lens, but incorporates new design features that allow the broader focal length range while maintaining the superb image quality. At the same time, the minimum focusing distance has been reduced from 0.5 meters to 0.38 meters.Improved water and dust resistance ensure that it will become the leading standard zoom lens in the EOS system.

Great lens! Little pricey though
I bought this lens a month ago, to complement the 70-200 f4 L zoom I have.
It is GREAT - great contrast, saturated colours, fast & silent focusing. Possibly almost TOO good quality, as it shows any imperfections in features.
Only minor issues - it IS expensive (& Amazon are not the cheapest actually) & a little on the heavy side. However, I have carried it around all day without any problems.
If you're not sure about the price - rent it for a day & you'll definitely buy it after that ...
Built like a tank, and almost as heavy - but superb quality
this is a very heavy lense at almost a kilogramme, and it's a really killer to carry around all day. But the images you can get from this lense are worth the shoulder strain - all of my best shots have been taken with it. Superb resolution, wonderful contrast and outstanding colour reproducton you'd expect from an L lense at this price. Sharpness is excellent - even at 2.8 it's very acceptable. It's also weather resistant. I just wish they could make it lighter. Or throw in some free physio therapy sessions.
An excellent general purpose lens
Superb build quality and results. OK so it is slightly on the heavy side but once you see the results you won't care.
The versatile range and superior performance make this my favourite wedding lens and an excellent general purpose lens.
