Books one should like but I hate
Madame Bovary: A Story of Provincial Life (Penguin Popular Classics)Madame Bovary: A Story of Provincial Life (Penguin Popular Classics) by Gustave Flaubert
Buy new: £2.00 / Used from: £0.01
Really really over-rated rubbish, like a cheap copy of Anna Karenina, not worth the paper its printed on to be honest. Almost (but not as quite as) trashy as Austen!
Great Expectations (Penguin Popular Classics)Great Expectations (Penguin Popular Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: £2.00 / Used from: £0.01
Because of the hype surrounding Dickens, one certainly has great expectations when beginning to read this novel, but they are sorely unjustified. Not a single likeable character in the entire book.
Hard Times (Penguin Popular Classics)Hard Times (Penguin Popular Classics) by Charles Dickens

With Dickens, I guess you either love him or hate him, I definitely fall into the second category. This book is full of the most ludicrous, non realistic characters imaginable.
The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set)The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: £11.96 / Used from: £6.47
A very boring trio of books, I only read them all to see what the big deal was about but am afraid it sadly passed me by.
Jane Austen 6-book Boxed Set: "Emma", "Pride and Prejudice", "Sense and Sensibility", "Persuasion", "Mansfield Park" and "Northanger Abbey" (Collector's Library)Jane Austen 6-book Boxed Set: "Emma", "Pride and Prejudice", "Sense and Sensibility", "Persuasion", "Mansfield Park" and "Northanger Abbey" (Collector's Library) by Jane Austen
Buy new: £23.47 / Used from: £19.99
To me these are very trashy novels that have no substance and relate only the most mundane of situations. No idea how they became classics.
