Synopsis
Established in 1985 and named in honour of the renowned Chesley Bonestell, the annual Chesley Awards are internationally respected as the most prestigious in the field of fantasy and science fiction art. This book, the first retrospective review of these awards, contains over 300 illustrations, all in full colour, as well as copious comments from the winning artists and the expert authors about their techniques and the thought-processes behind the images they create.

Beautifully printed and bound with almost flawless color reproduction this volume is highly recommended by me to all of those who enjoy SF and fantasy art. It is a glorious collection of the Chesley Award winning artists that are familiar to most of us by their cover art that appears on the books we read, but this time, their art is not being defaced by type. Printed on a high quality stock, wonderfully designed by (yes, I was so impressed I went in search of this man's name in the small print at the front of the book) Malcolm Couch, and filled with comments by the artists. In my humble opinion this volume surpasses any of the anthologies that Spectrum or Collins produces.
A Glorious Collection!
If you'd like to see what the very best of fantasy and SF art has been like over the past two decades, look no further than this book! Michael Whelan, Don Maitz, Bob Eggleton, James Gurney, Frank Frazetta, Alex Schomburg and even Chesley Bonestell himself are among the many great names whose work graces the pages of this book, with lots of fine paintings from each. But also a delight are the pictures by countless lesser known artists whose work I now want to explore more deeply.
This book is an absolute treasure trove. If you buy only one art book this year, you could hardly do better than make it this one.
