Product Description

Dave Thompson, author of Virgin's acclaimed Red Hot Chili Peppers biography, takes a new and very detailed look at the creation of one of the world's most influential bands. After all the streets of London had been covered in 'Clapton Is God' tributes, the three top rock instrumentalists of their time, all stars in their own right, came together to form Cream. Cream went on to become the first band to break open the lucrative US market by dint of their live shows alone. Updated to include details of their recent tour, this definitive account goes on the road with them then and now, day by relentlessly hedonistic day.

Review
"'Essential for all Cream devotees and any true rock'n'roll fan' Total Guitar 'Biographies of Cream have been rare and this latest is impeccably timed' Sunday Times"

From the Back Cover
Eric Clapton, Juack Bruce and Ginger Baker exploded onto the scene the day after England won the World Cup in 1966 and within two years they too were the champions of the world. Cream were modern music's first true supergroup, creating some of rock's most enduring anthems including 'Sunshing Of Your Love', 'I Feel Free', 'Badge', 'Strange Brew' and 'White Room'.
Jam-packed with incisive new interviews with a glittering cast of band members, friends, rivals and onlookers, Cream:How Eric Clapton Took the World by Storm reads like the best rock fiction ever written. Among the close network of legendary bands of the time, none were more ruthless in their devotion to music than Cream - three momentous talents, three momentous egos and three musicians who rarely saw eye to eye. This biography depicts life on the road from the swinging sixties and through the reactionary brutality of America in 1968 to their eagerly anticipated return in 2005, which saw them playing Madison Square Gardens and the Royal Albert Hall to both long-devoted followers and a new generation of fans.
Dave Thompson is the author of some eighty rock titles including biographies of U2, Kurt Cobain, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Genensis and the Cure. As well as writing a regular column in Goldmine magazine. Thompson has also contibuted to many leading music magazines such as Mojo, Q, Rolling Stone and Melody Maker.

Customer Reviews

Every gritty detail.4
After reading Chris Welch's Cream book and its later update, this edition by Dave Thompson offers a far more detailed account of those heady 2-and-a-bit years when Cream ruled the world. Thompson's fact filled tome makes for far more interesting reading, and gets into the almost 'soap opera'-like detail of what was going on within the band during their meteoric rise in the rock world, and the pain which split them up at the height of their success. A veteran of the original 1968 final show, this book is just what I needed, and answered many of the questions which were still nagging some 40 years later. Top Notch!
