Amazon.co.uk Review
Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising, self-titled debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era.
Mentored by Paul Anka (whose 1950s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me", "The Way You Look Tonight", "That's All") and rock-era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley
CD Description
Debut album from young Canadian crooner being touted as a "new Sinatra". Introduced to classic vocal jazz by his grandfather, here he shows a knack for making familiar repertoire his own, bringing his bold, expressive voice to a selection of standards from the 30s and 40s as well as covers of Van Morrison's 'Moondance' and the Bee Gees' 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart,' performed with the Bee Gees themselves. Produced by pop supremo David Foster (Whitney Houston, The Corrs,Toni Braxton, Celine Dion).
Customer Reviews
Michael Buble's voice will bowl you over!!!
I am really impressed with this debut CD by major new talent, Michael Buble! After listening to the music clips, I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT!!! This 25 year old Canadian really knows how to swing, and has a voice that easily rivals that of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and Co. Michael's love of this type of music is apparent as he sings with such feeling and vitality, and has a charisma all of his own. Michael also puts his stamp on Van Morrison's "Moondance", George Michael's "Kissing A Fool" and Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life". I might even go as far as saying that Michael's versions are even better! Other gems are the Bee Gees hit "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", with Barry Gibb providing background vocals, and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", originally sung by Queen's Freddy Mercury.
Another wonderful thing about this album is the superb orchestra, which plays with just as much energy and enthusiasm as Michael. I urge young and old alike to buy this CD - you'll be glad you did! As for me, I love this album so much, that I hope it won't be long before Michael records another!
Michael Buble's voice will make you swoon!
After listening to music samples from Michael Buble's self titled, debut album a couple of weeks ago, I just HAD to have it! I instantly fell in love with his voice, even though I'd never heard of him before. His voice is so smooth and romantic, along the lines of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. This album really swings, and every song is brilliantly performed. I think even "Old Blue Eyes" himself would have been impressed!
Michael Buble (pronounced Boo-blay) grew up listening to the music of Frank, Dean, Paul Anka, and singers of that genre. This 25 year old Canadian has even put a touch of swing into Van Morrison's "Moondance" and George Michael's "Kissing A Fool".
I urge young and old alike to buy this superb album. You'll be glad you did!
A MUSIC lover's dream come true a treasure!
This c.d. stirred emotions in me that can't be described. I found myself near tears during some songs - Buble evokes such passion and feeling, and on other songs he had me literally dancing and feeling as light as a feather. He will move you too.
I'm certain that George Michael must approve of the fabulous job done by Buble of Kissing a Fool. Likewise so would Lou Rawls for the splendid rendition of You'll never find another love - and the list goes on and on and climaxes with Barry Gibbs of the BeeGees backing up Buble on the best take of How can you mend a broken heart ever ever ever done.....
Buy it, listen to it - this c.d. will move you. It is that good!
