CD Description
Though their paths crossed on the Miles Davis classic IN A SILENT WAY and on Larry Coryell's SPACES, this disc is the first actual collaboration between pianist Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin. The Five Peace Band truly is a super-group, the other members being the versatile bassist Christian McBride (acoustic and electric), saxophonist Kenny Garrett (a Miles alumnus too), and fusion drumming ace Vinnie Colaiuta. LIVE features cozy, intimate Corea-McLaughlin duets, sizzling electric playing, and enchanting acoustic passages. They pay tribute to Miles with a medley of "In A Silent Way" and "It's about That Time," with yet another Miles grad Herbie Hancock guesting on keyboards. And there's even a tasty rendition of a bebop classic, Jackie McLean's "Dr. Jackle." Aside from a righteous meeting-of-the-minds, LIVE proves that fusion as a concept is not played out.

Innovative and inventive
Chick Corea and John McLaughlin made musical history when they played on Miles
Davis' landmark albums "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew". Here these two musical legends have united to play some stunning and expressive Music that truly defies any definition, though words like jazz and fusion might be appropriate.
This is really not Mahavishnu Orchestra meets Return To Forever, and it's certainly not a contest in who can play most notes pr. second. Instead it's visonary and creative unfoldments of Here and Now. The very long tracks brimming with intelligent improvisations are mostly of newer date with Mclaughlin's three contributions taken from recent albums "Industrial Zen" and "Floating Point". Corea also delves into recent compositions. We get a jazzstandard, some blues and a medley of Joe Zawinul's "In A Silent Way" and Miles Davis' "It's About That Time" with a brilliant guestspot by Herbie Hancock.
Mclaughlin, who plays clean jazzfusionguitar - no laptop no guitarsynth to the delight of more orthodox fans - and Corea have rarely sounded better than here, clearly inspiring each other to reach for the heights and depths. Supplemented by the great saxplayer Kenny Garrett who matches the intensity and virtuosity of the bandleaders. Christian McBride playing stunningly on both acoustic and electric bass, driving the music with fine jazzy lines and delivering some blistering solos. While drumlegend Vinnie Colaiuta anchors the proceedings in expert style.
An instant classic!
Straight jazz fusion
This is straight jazz fusion music. It does exactly what is says on the label. It has keyboards, guitar, sax, bass and drums (what else do you need?)The music is played very well by top class musicians and they seen to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. This comes across strongly in the music they are playing together. They are well... just jamming. the proof is in the music 20 min or so per track. Some of the tracks are a little less good, but having 100min of great live jazz fusion music in 2 hours is fine. John Mclaughlin is not trying to re-create his glory 1970's and Chick Corea has never sounded this good since his 1970's glory years. They are also not trying to outdo each other which is important (they would have a few years ago). They seem just to want to enjoy playing music together. This comes across and it is refreshing. Buy it you need it in your collection!
No resting on laurels...
It is not very often that the sum of the parts exceeds the whole and it would be easy to assume that five great talents, some getting on a bit too, would just be getting together to relive old times and top up their pension. In most cases the result would be disappointing, but not here. There a moments of brilliance from all of the band. They push the boundaries in many areas and it all hangs together perfectly. This album will stand the test of time, delivering continuing enjoyment on each listening. If you want to hear amazing musicianship start here.
