CD Description
Earthquake at the Avalon features Guitar Legend Larry Coryell in a special and unique concert, recorded at The Avalon, California in October 2005. Superbly backed by The Souls Dirge Band (Bernard 'Pretty' Burdie on Drums, John Hart on Bass, Winston Byrd playing Trumpets, Coryell s son Julien on Guitar/Keyboards and featuring David Hidalgo of Los Lobos), this album, captures Coryell's progressive style of play, which primarily fused the ideas of rock and jazz into one intense and funky entity.
About the Artist
Although not quite the household name of his contemporaries, he can still be argued as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Among others, he has performed with: Eric Clapton, Chick Corea, Albert Dailey, Jimi Hendrix, Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Al Di Meola, Biréli Lagrène, Emily Remler, Pat Metheny, Kazuhito Yamashita, Brian Q. Torff, The Head Shop, Sharon Isbin, Laurindo Almeida, and Larry Gray. In 1973 he formed his own group, The Eleventh House. Following the break-up of this band, Coryell played mainly acoustic guitar, but returned to electric guitar later in the 1980s. In 1979, Coryell formed 'The Guitar Trio' with jazz fusion guitarist John McLaughlin and flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. The group toured Europe briefly, eventually releasing a video recorded at Royal Albert Hall in London entitled ''Meeting of Spirits''. Coryell continues to be a musical icon that should never be forgotten, and it is without question that he deserves his prominent place in the history of music. With over 60 recordings under his belt, he continues to be a groundbreaking force in the guitar world.
