Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Jan Garbarek, that most contained of saxophonists, was almost caught shaking his booty at his Festival Hall show with this band in 2007. Maybe the extra thrill imparted by sometime rock drummer Manu Katche and the Jaco Pastorius-like electric bassist Yuri Daniel - and an audience reaction rather different to the familiar Garbarek-induced collective trance - triggered ECM's decision to put out the first-ever Garbarek live album. This double CD was recorded in Dresden a month earlier, and it has all the London gig's intensity. Fans needn't fear the banishing of windswept-landscape Garbarek or pensively folk-dancing Garbarek - they appear on the elegiac "Twelve Moons" and meditative "The Tall Tear Trees". But from the eager opening theme of "Paper Nut", through the slow-build of Milton Nascimento's "Milagre Dos Peixes", to Katche's solo percussion storm on "Grooving Out!" and on to the darkly lyrical encore "Voy Cantando", this marks a Garbarek group with impact--John Fordham, Guardian 5 star review

Jazzwise, (Stuart Nicholson), October 2009
(4 stars) Wonderfully expressive saxophone tone...Garbarek remains a master musician at the peak of his form.

The Times, (John Bungey), September 25, 2009
(4 stars) A supremely melodic, seasoned unit that has forged an uncommonly strong bond with its audience.

Jan Garbarek Group -> Dresden5
This review is based on the music available via the Spotify service - my CD order has been placed on Amazon and I look forward to hearing this release in all its sonic glory.

This is the Jan Garbarek Group's first live disc, and their first release for about 5 years. I've seen Garbarek live three times now, and thought I'd miss Eberhard Weber's bass and Marilyn Mazur's incredible one-woman percussion orchestra, but the new band's rhythm section - featuring Brazilian Yuri Daniel on bass, and an explosive Manu Katche on drums - propel the music forward and give this incarnation of the group an incredible intensity. The first time I saw Garbarek live, I heard someone shout at the band "improvise!", well this set for me is a devastating answer to anyone who had any doubt about the saxophonist's jazz credentials: here is the sound of musicians striking sparks off each other, the album delights and surprises, once-familiar pieces (e.g. "Twelve Moons") are played in totally unexpected, revealing ways.

And a word about the sound quality. ECM's wonderful, reverberant "house" sound is evident, but the clarity and definition here is outstanding, particularly for a live recording.

Don't hesitate.

Disappointed3
Having enjoyed a number of Garbarek albums I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately I was disappointed.

In particular, the rhythm section seem to lack the subtle qualities I was expecting. Maybe it is the use of a bass guitar rather than an acoustic bass or possibly the rather overpowering agressive drumming on some of the tracks. Anyway, its an interesting listen, but I won't be playing it as often as some of his other CDs.

GOD IS IN HEAVEN AND GARBAREK IS IN EARTH, BUT NOW GARBAREK IS BECAME NEAR TO BRASIL, MAYBE INFLUENCED BY HIS NEW BASSIST BRAZILIAN.THE RESULT IS A GARBAREK EVEN BETTER IF THERE IS POSSIBLE.TERRIFIC CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
