This the tenth in the series of Kaffe Fassett's highly successful patchwork and quilting books from Rowan, celebrating a decade of great books from one of the foremost colourists of his time. It offers the reader 20 new quilt designs that embrace a strong floral theme. Using Kaffe's new fabrics. Photographed at Great Dixter, the 15th century English manor house home of Christopher Lloyd, the well known pioneering gardener and writer, the intensely coloured borders and topiary are the sumptuous backdrop for the glorious collection of new quilt designs from Kaffe and his chosen designers. In the introduction Kaffe talks about the approach to colour he shares with Christopher Lloyd and his joy in seeing the quilts displayed in such a riot of colour. Kaffe's new printed fabrics, each in six colourways, include Bekah, Brocade Floral and Pinking Flower, which are lush florals and Targets and Jungle Stripe, which are dramatic large scale designs. Spot and Aboriginal Dot are small-scale designs that quilters find particularly useful. Colours range from the rich and sumptuous to delicate pastels. New woven stripes from India come in rich earthy shades and are a welcome addition to the range. To celebrate their arrival, Kaffe has created a second very graphic version of one of his quilt layouts, the first one created in yellow and gold prints. Country Garden Quilts is constructed rather like a cookery book with a sumptuous photograph of the finished project, an ingredients list and written instructions illustrated with coloured diagrams, plus a flat shot' photograph and all the templates needed.

Disappointing for Kaffe
I am a real Kaffe Quilt fan, and love pawing over his fabrics and quilt designs. However, I was really disappointed with this book. I have not found that there are many ideas and colour combinations that add to the ideas in his previous quilt books. Quilts in the Sun released last year, I found really inspirational, but Country Garden Quilts just seems to rehash old ideas. I wanted to see how Kaffe used some of his newer fabrics such as Aboriginal Dot, Spot and Daisy but I don't think his new fabrics have been used in new ways. They've just been used in the same colour combinations, such as blue and white, and heavy saturation of red. I think that there is such pressure for the Rowan designers to produce one book a year, that Fassett hasn't had time to experiment and explore as he did in the earlier books. My favourite by far is Passionate Patchwork.
Kaffe Fassett's country garden quilts
Kaffe Fassett's quilt designs always leap off the page and hit the viewer right in the eye, and Country Garden Quilts, his new collection, is no exception. Quilts drape, flow and trail across Christopher Lloyd's garden at Great Dixter, Sussex, and close-up photos show the fabrics off at their dazzling best. There are 20 projects (Diagonal Madness and Knot Garden have, I think, appeared in previous KF books) plus a design and article on 'Patchwork gardening' by Jane Brocket, as well as the usual excellent templates and instructions. I really like this book: the photos are inspiring and KF's choice of designs such as Square in a Square are suitable for beginners with minimal sewing experience and small amounts of fabric. One of the best features of the series (this is number 10) is the use of templates: not every quilter owns a sewing machine and not every beginning quilter wants the baptism of fire that accompanies choosing, buying and learning to use one - just basic running stitch is enough to make all of the quilts in this book, and the satisfaction, once a quilt is completed, is second to none. I recommend this book - it's excellent all round.
Fabulous
If you like quilting and you enjoy colour this is the book for you. Each quilt has a colour photo, a detailed list of fabrics used (which are current and easily obtained) and all templates which are either full or half sized. This book is a joy.
