FinePix S100FS Features and Benefits
Capture the true beauty of nature with richer tonal gradation.
In photographic terms, dynamic range is used to describe the ratio between the maximum (white) and minimum (black) measurable light intensities. In nature photography, there are many subjects with a great difference between brightness and darkness, such as a bright sky against a dark sea. Such variation is difficult to achieve without an extended Dynamic Range as a narrow range causes over or under exposure.
The FinePix S100FS is the first digital camera with a closed-unit design to have an extended Dynamic Range, (100%, 200%, 400%), similar to that of negative film, thanks to the newly designed Super CCD sensor and processor combination.
The colour fidelity of Fujifilm's reversal films — now inside a digital camera.
The Film Simulation mode allows you to take photos as if you are selecting the most appropriate type of film for each scene.
Velvia mode
By selecting the distinctive colour and saturation of Velvia, you can produce the vivid colours of nature with great sharpness and colour tone based on red and green.
PROVIA mode
This is a powerful mode for any subject. Produce the natural colours and standard tonal gradation of PROVIA film as trusted by professional photographers.
SOFT mode
Select this mode for soft, fine and smooth tonality that produces minute detail, true to the natural beauty of your subject.
Film simulation has also been combined with bracketing. Just one press of the shutter will take three images based on each type of film, allowing you to select and save the one you prefer. Only Fujifilm, with our knowledge of everything there is to know about film, could possibly develop this unique function.
An all-new 28mm wide-angle to 400mm telephoto zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilisation.
The FinePix S100FS incorporates a high-magnification 14.3x Fujinon zoom lens which covers a broad zoom range and also features a Super Macro setting for shots as close as 1cm from the subject. The flexibility within this lens and manual zoom means that precise framing of your subject has never been easier.
This model also features a new lens shift image stabilisation mechanism which uses a sensor to detect and compensate for vibration within the camera body.
Fujinon optics have an enviable reputation within the photography industry for their clarity and quality, and unlike interchangeable lenses, this one's fixed to the camera, so the interior will always be protected from dust and the elements.
The all-new design of the CCD and processor delivers inspirational image quality.
Super CCD technology has long been associated with class-leading performance in Fujifilm's top-end digital cameras. Unlike generic image sensors, this system is developed and manufactured entirely in-house, and maintains high pixel numbers and enhances light collection efficiency and light capture efficiency per pixel.
The new processor is able to read at high speed by the latest image processing technology. Parallel processing enables the creation of images with smooth tonal expression while maintaining high resolution and extended Dynamic Range.
This combination delivers impressive ISO capabilities of up to ISO 6400 (at 6 MP), and an incredible ISO 10,000 at 3 Megapixels, which offers incredible potential in low light conditions bringing you great, blur-free results.
The FinePix S100FS features three bracketing modes that are useful for high-level photography.
A single shutter release can take three consecutive shots so you can concentrate on getting the perfect shot, and decide later which image best captures the moment.
Film Simulation bracketing
Produces three images in Velvia, PROVIA and SOFT modes.
Dynamic Range bracketing
Capture three images with alternative Dynamic Range settings of 100%, 200% and 400%.
AE bracketing
Continuous capture of three different exposures with a range of up to ±1.0EV.
Featuring a range of high-speed continuous shooting functions.
The new sensor and processor combination results in reliable high-speed performance; making it easy to shoot moving subjects such as pets, children and sports.
This feature allows high-speed shooting including up to 50 continuous shots at 7 frames/second at a resolution of 3 megapixels or 3 frames/second at the full 11.1 megapixels. When it comes to viewing your pictures, high-speed playback is possible at an amazing 10 frames/second.
Over 14 scene position settings for every shooting possibility.
The FinePix S100FS provides a choice of 14 different scene settings that upon selection, allow you to automatically optimise the shutter speed, exposure and white balance for many subject types. To name a few, you can choose from Nature (Soft and Vivid), Flower and Portrait modes to suit your scene or subject.
The FinePix S100FS also features two custom modes for you to save your own preferences for settings such as film simulation and dynamic range.
A range of high-speed, high-precision auto-focusing (AF) modes.
Featuring four AF modes of single AF, continuous AF, manual focus and one-push AF (for manual focus), the FinePix S100 FS responds to any photographic condition, and provides high-speed auto focusing in low-light conditions, which has been difficult to achieve in other auto-focus cameras.

S100FS
Just upgraded to this camera from the S9500 -
A brilliant camera - 11.1MP with a 400mm zoom and a 67mm lens diameter.
You can adjust so many settings - The colour - tone - sharpness of the outlines - and finetune the white balance. You can even customise your own settings for quick accsess.
The dynamic range is good - it really brings contrasting areas into a good exposure.....Also with a fast SD card you can shoot mulitple images quickly that save to the card very fast......Its fully manual and fully automatic - You can even lock pictures on the sd card and then just delete everything else in one go.
Theres a real lack of noise on the camera - even at 400 asa - and 800's pretty good.
I think i'll be able to print at A3 - and for A4 the quality will be brilliant.
The included software also has a Raw file converter - which has been improved so you can change all the settings before converting it to a Tif or JPG.
So looking forwards to bringing this camera on holiday.
The fixed lens lets you photograph from a 1cm macro to 28mm wide angle up to a 400mm zoom - For what you can do with this camera its definately 5 Star
A good all-round camera
Bridge, or 'prosumer' digital cameras (typically pseudo SLRs with electronic view finders (evf) in place of an direct view through the lens) have been something of a Fuji speciality. With DSLRs coming down in price to comparable levels, does this kind of camera still have a place? Yes, for many it does. Bridge cameras, pretty much by definition, are compromises. They won't (quite) deliver the professional quality of a DSLR. The upside is that they are 'all in one' units. One lens covers the whole range (in this case 28mm to 400mm equivalents).
This camera weighs roughly what a decent 35mm SLR would and is similar in size. The optics are of a very high quality and the various controls are intelligently laid out.
The 10,000 iso speed is a bit of a gimmick, but all else does what it claims to do. The picture quality is superb. The autofocus/exposure systems work well and the manual settings are well laid out and intuitive.
The lithium battery is well housed and easy to take in and out, and the battery charge is quick, typically a couple of hours to charge from drained.
In conclusion, it's not a professional's camera, but it is very good. It has a solid feel, and takes SD, XD and SDHC cards.
The software provided is OK, but largely unnecessary.
Recommended to any serious amateur photographer.
I Would Give this Six Stars if I could
This is my fifth digital camera since 2000 and I think it is amazing. I have owned one other make in that time but pixel for pixel the results where far less impressive than the Fuji. I can't comment on reliability as I have only just taken delivery. First of all it may depend on what you want a camera for but what ever some people say or its technical spec, I can honestly tell you its performance is stunning. Maybe not on paper compared to SLR's, although the spec is impressive, but in the real world it's a winner. By the time you have changed your Len's on a SLR your subject has long gone. I seriously considered going back to SLR as I had used them for years and Pentax was my favourite, but unless you are a professional I think this camera makes the need for one superfluous. I have been told by a local camera shop owner that it actually does out perform many entry level SLR's. It's obviously not a compact but it beats lugging lots of lenses and ancillary equipment on coast paths or over moor land. Also it is competitively priced. I know someone who is still saving up for that £300 lens to go with his SLR and in the past year has missed many wonderful photo opportunities. Landscapes, capturing the mood at all times of year is my thing but also insects so full manual control is essential for me. Manual focus and shutter priority gives me the flexibility I need. To sum up this camera gives you the quality and performance all in one package to deliver satisfaction to all but the most picky of photographers. Well done Fuji, keep pushing the boundaries.

The FinePix S100FS features Fujifilm's latest technologies including extended Dynamic Range and Film Simulation Modes providing the next level of imaging excellence. It has been designed for photographers who want more from their camera and reproduces colours and tones that are invisible to the naked eye.
