Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Just when you thought that Barry White was but a washed-up walrus carcass on the beach of has-beens, a certain US TV series about a certain skinny lawyer came along and returned him to his rightful position as guru of lurve. Fortunately during his absence, many of his albums slipped down onto the mid-price range, a fact for which you should be eternally grateful as it means you can get CDs like this for bargain prices. Greatest Hits does exactly what it says on the tin, and being Vol.1 means that it is from the best period of his career, hence the inclusion of classics like, well, every track, but especially "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe" and "Never Never Gonna Give You Up". If you want a compilation spanning his entire career, ropy bits and all, then go for The Collection; but, if you want a stack of classic soul, then this is of the purest hot-buttered variety. --Helen Marquis

CD Description
The original love man, Barry White straddled the line between early disco and lush, Philly International-style R&B in his mid-'70s prime. That unique paradigm occupied by White isperfectly anthologised on this definitive collection. Like Al Green, White displays a single-minded commitment to romantic/carnal fulfilment that borders on obsessive. That's justthe kind of emotional involvement that makes for great art.The billowing strings and luscious arrangements are the satin sheets and pillowcases that support White's basso profundo exclamations of love and lust. On classics like "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe", White's soft, deep monologues are as affecting as his singing. This collection is the sonic equivalent of a dozen red, long-stemmed roses and a heart-shaped box ofchocolates; the sort of thing for which Valentine's Day wasinvented.
